VILLANOVA, Pa. - The fifth-seeded Maryland women's water polo team lost all three games on the first day of competition at the Southern Division Championships at the Villanova Swim Complex. The Terps dropped their first game 9-4 to fourth-seeded Villanova, then lost 15-2 to top-seeded Princeton before falling 17-3 to third-seeded Bucknell.
Maryland took an early lead in game one against host-school Villanova, who was coming off a 13-8 loss to Princeton, when senior Sarah Wahba (Crofton, Md.) scored her first of two goals just 1:34 seconds in, but Villanova came right back to tie it up six seconds later. The Terps jumped out in front again 2:52 later when senior Laura Nolan (Towson, Md.) scored, but two Wildcat goals put Villanova up 3-2 at the end of the first quarter.
The Wildcats began to pull away in the second quarter, scoring the only three goals of the period, and had a 6-2 lead at halftime. After a scoreless third quarter, it took 2:39 before either team would score in the fourth. Wahba finally ended the scoreless streak with her second goal of the game before sophomore Marissa Corwin (Orinda, Calif.) scored her first goal of the season to pull the Terps to within two at 6-4. But it would not be enough as the Wildcats scored the final three goals of the game to win 9-4.
Corwin had 13 saves while giving up six goals before turning the goalkeeper duties over to freshman Stacy Glantz (Roslyn, N.Y.) in the fourth quarter. Glantz had two saves while allowing the final three Wildcat goals. Sophomore Allison Kuzniar (St. Charles, Ill.) led the Terps with five steals.
Next up for Maryland was top-seeded Princeton, who had already defeated the Terps twice this season. The Tigers' domination continued as they shut out the Terps 11-0 in the first half before scoring the only three goals of the third quarter. Maryland finally broke through when Nolan scored just 12 seconds into the fourth period. After another Princeton goal, senior Meghan Graves (Kennett Square, Pa.) put the Terps on the board again. Princeton won the game 15-2.
Corwin allowed six goals and had seven saves, while Glantz had two saves against nine goals allowed. Nolan led the team with three steals.
In the final game of the evening, the Terps again faced an opponent who had beaten them twice previously in the season. Bucknell lost 7-6 to second-seeded George Washington earlier in the day. The Bison blanked the Terps through the first 11:42 of the game, jumping out to a 6-0 lead before Nolan scored Maryland's first goal of the game with 2:18 remaining in the second quarter. Bucknell would score twice more and take an 8-1 lead into halftime.
The Bison scored two more goals in the third quarter before Graves gave the Terps another tally. After another three Bison goals, the score was 13-2 at the end of the third quarter. Graves notched the first goal of the fourth quarter before Bucknell scored another four to win 17-3.
Corwin had ten saves and allowed 11 goals in three quarters, while Glantz notched three saves against six goals in the fourth. Senior Elyse Corwin (Orinda, Calif.) led the Terps with four steals.
With three losses, Maryland automatically moves on to the fourth-place game at 1 p.m. tomorrow. The Terps will take on the loser of the Villanova/Bucknell match.
