FREDERICK, Md. - The University of Maryland baseball team fell to West Virginia University on Wednesday at Harry Grove Stadium in Frederick, Md., by a score of 6-3. The Terrapins struggled at the plate in the loss to the Mountaineers.
The Terrapins (18-25) were only able to muster up five hits against the West Virginia (16-22) pitching staff. Maryland took advantage with their base runners however, stealing three bases in the game.
The Terrapins scored their first run of the ballgame in the third inning. Junior Truan Mehl led off the inning with a bunt single and then proceeded to steal both second and third base. Mehl came around to score later in the inning when junior Elliot Singletary singled to right field.
Maryland brought in another run to tie the game at 2-2 in the fourth inning. Sophomore Brian Jarosinski, who stole second base after receiving a walk, came in to score on junior Jason Maxey's double down the right field line.
After West Virginia added four runs to their total, the Terps got one back in the eighth inning to cut the lead to 6-3. Senior Anthony Buffone led off the inning with a single and came around to score on a wild pitch and error by the Mountaineers.
Buffone was the only Terrapin with at least two hits in the game, finishing 2-for-4 with one run scored. Maxey, Mehl and Singletary were the other Maryland players who recorded hits.
Sophomore Seth Overbey came out of the bullpen to relieve the Terps starter, junior Chris Clem, in the seventh inning. Overbey did not allow a run in 1.2 innings of work. Junior Chris Bowen came in to pitch a perfect inning of relief in the ninth inning.
The Terps will be in action next when they meet up with Towson University on May 4 for a 7 p.m. game. Please check umterps.com for updates on the game's location.
