COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Kelly Calkin, an all-state player from St. Charles, Ill., has signed a National Letter of Intent to join the women's golf team at the University of Maryland, Terp head coach Jason Rodenhaver announced today.

Calkin has lettered four seasons in golf at St. Charles East High School. She placed fifth individually in the Illinois State Championship as a junior, and has been the captain and MVP of her team as a junior and senior. Calkin won the Upstate Conference individual title in 2003.

"Kelly is a solid player," said Rodenhaver. "She is a strong player who grew up in a golfing family. Her mother, Renie, played golf at Penn State and is now a PGA professional. We look for her to compete for one of the two starting spots now open due to graduating seniors."

While at St. Charles East, she has posted the lowest four-year scoring average in the history of the school. She also earned All-Conference and Academic All-Conference honors as a sophomore and junior.

On the American Junior Golf Association circuit, Calkin has posted a pair of top-five finishes and made it to the final 16 in the Western Junior Girls Championship, where she shot a 74 in qualifying. She also had a top 10 at the Hudson Invitational.

Her brother Mike plays golf at Miami, Ohio. Calkin chose Maryland over Rollins, UNC Wilmington and Xavier.
