REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. - Jessica Reno, who just completed a standout freshman season on the University of Maryland women's golf team, won the Delaware Women's Golf Association Amateur Championship on Wednesday, playing just days after the death of her father.
Reno finished with a three-round total of 224, three strokes ahead of defending champion Meghan Adams. She shot a 1-over-par 73 in the final round Wednesday after starting the day with a two-stroke lead.
Her father died of a heart attack while playing golf last Saturday, according to The News Journal newspaper.
"I didn't want to play, but my dad would have wanted me to play," Reno told The News Journal. "If I was sick, like in last year's (Delaware Women's Golf Association) junior tournament, he would always push me to keep playing. So, knowing my dad, he would have wanted me to play."
According to the newspaper story, when she received the award for winning the title, she said, "I just want to dedicate this to my father; this is for him." The story said she then received a standing ovation from the gathering.
Reno finished her freshman season at Maryland with a 79.4 scoring average overall, but was third on the Terps with a 78.8 average in five spring tournaments. Her best finish was a tie for 11th at the Spider Spring Invitational in April.
She tied for 26th at the 2004 Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament, firing a 71 in the final round to tie for the Terps' best round of the tournament.
Reno, from Wilmington, Del., was one of two freshmen who were in the Terps' lineup for all nine tournaments during the 2003-04 season.
