
Terp Field Hockey to Play Exhibition Matches

COLLGE PARK, Md. - After a week of preseason practices, the Terrapin field hockey team hold an intrasquad scrimmage on Friday, Aug. 20 at 7 p.m. at the state-of-the-art Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. Maryland will then take on outside competition for the first time this season when it hosts the University of Calgary on Sunday, Aug. 22 at 3 p.m. Head coach Missy Meharg and the field hockey squad kicked off the preseason with its annual midnight fitness run on Thursday, Aug. 12. The Terps, who return 15 letterwinners from last year's squad that went 20-4 and reached the semifinals of the NCAA Tournament, welcome six new faces to the team. Of the 15 returning players, nine starters return, including four All-Americans. Colleen Barbieri was an All-American in 2002 and is playing in her final season as a Terp. All-Americans Jackie Ciconte, Paula Infante and Lauren Powley will look to follow up standout seasons by helping the Terps capture a sixth ACC title and fourth NCAA crown. This weekend will be the first time fans will meet the six newcomers. Freshmen Kendall Beveridge and Kim Ziegler hail from the state of Maryland, while Katie Mockus comes to College Park after a successful career at nationally ranked Shawnee High School in New Jersey. Sophomore Linzi Jones and Janneke van Leeuwen have traveled the furthest to join the team, with Jones calling Australia home and van Leeuwen coming from the Netherlands. Kathryn Masson from Richmond, British Columbia, will add depth to the goalkeeping position while challenging sophomore Christina Restivo for playing time. The Terps officially kick off the regular season in Boston, Mass., vs. Boston College on Aug. 28 at 1 p.m. It will be the first of three games in New England. All games will be played at Harvard University.
