The Maryland women's soccer team, led by Mallory Mahar's (Medina, Ohio) two goals, downed George Washington tonight to win its second and final scrimmage of the summer. Mahar tallied her first goal - the game-winner - in the 56th minute of the contest, and the Terps added three goals in the final 22 minutes to clinch the win. The Terps and Colonials entered the second of the three 30-minute periods in a scoreless tie, despite a 9-0 Maryland advantage in shots in the first. Mahar got the Terps on the board midway through the second period when she controlled a cross from freshman Carissa Gilbert and fired it past George Washington netminder Anna Handzlik. It was Mahar's second goal of the weekend - she scored the game-winner in Friday's scrimmage against Richmond - and Gilbert's second assist in as many scrimmages. Mahar found the back of the net again in the 69th minute when she headed a Kimmy Francis (Richboro, Pa.) corner kick past GW keeper Amie Kern. It was Mahar's third goal in the team's two scrimmages and Francis' first assist - the redshirt junior led the Terps with six helpers in 2003. Less than seven minutes later, Mahar keyed another Maryland goal - an own goal in the 75th minute. The junior fired a cross in front of the George Washington net, which deflected off a Colonial defender and just inside the far post. Two minutes and nine seconds later (76:39), Simone Dekker (Ringwood, N.J.) found the back of the net to tally the Terps' third goal in less than eight minutes. The goal was keyed by a Lindsay Niehaus (Cincinnati, Ohio) pass from 35 yards out, which Dekker controlled and one-touched past Kern. The score put the Terps up by the final 4-0 margin. Maryland opens up its regular season on Friday at Towson at 4:00 p.m. The Terps hold a 4-0 advantage over the Tigers, including a 3-2 victory in 2003. On Sunday, August 29th, the team will return for its home opener against William & Mary. The Terps have won the last three contests in the series and are 6-11-0 all-time against the Tribe.
