The Maryland women's soccer team, holding a 1-0-1 record after its first week of regular season play, will host the Virginia Tech Hokies (2-0-0) at 7:00 p.m. in the conference opener for both teams. In last week's action, the Terps opened their 2004 campaign with a 1-0 overtime victory over Towson on Friday, August 27th. Mallory Mahar tallied the game-winning goal off a cross from Nataly Arias and moved Maryland to 1-0-0 on the young season. Mahar notched her second goal of 2004, this time a game-tying goal, in Sunday's 1-1 tie with William & Mary. The Hokies will come to College Park boasting a 2-0-0 record and a 13-1 scoring margin and are fresh off a school record-breaking 9-0 victory over Virginia Military Institute on Tuesday. In 2003, the team posted a 9-9-0 mark and went 2-4 in Big East play. It returns five starters and six letterwinners from a year ago and is 0-3-0 against the Terps in the schools' all-time series. The Friday contest, along with a Florida State-Miami match-up at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, will be the second and third games of the 2004 ACC season. Sixth-ranked Virginia (according to Soccer Buzz) downed Miami 4-0 on Sunday, August 29th to kick off the conference slate. The Cavaliers, ranked sixth nationally by Soccer Buzz, are also ranked first in the Mid-Atlantic region. Maryland is ranked eighth in the Mid-Atlantic, while their Sunday (8/29) opponent, William & Mary, checks in at 14th. Virginia Tech is not currently ranked in the top-15 of the poll.
