Five-Game Home Stretch Comes to Close vs. Towson
A five-game home stretch comes to an end with the Terrapin field hockey team hosting instate foe Towson on Tuesday, Sept. 14. It is the first meeting between the teams since 2000 and is the Tigers' first trip back to College Park since 1999.
The current homestand has seen the Terps win all four of their games, three coming by shutouts.
Terps on TV
Maryland's Sept. 17 game at Princeton will be televised by CSTV making it the second-straight year a Terrapin field hockey game will be broadcast. Last year, the Terps' 3-1 win over Ohio State on Oct. 5 was broadcast by the same network. This year's game between the Terps and the Tigers will first air on Thursday, Sept. 23 at 8 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. and will be replayed several times until Oct. 8. Check DirecTV listings for more information.
A Look At The Terps
Once again, junior All-American Jackie Ciconte is the most efficient scorer on the team, scoring on 28.6 percent of her shots. She leads the team in goals and points with six and 13, respectively. Not far behind Ciconte is classmate Tiffany Marsh who has 12 points, which is second on the team, and a team-high tying four assists. After notching the game-winning goals in both games of the Terrapin Invitational, Marsh also has a team-high and career-high three game winners. Senior Anja Boettcher is second on the team in shot percentage at .263 and goals with five.
Sophomore Christina Restivo continues to be solid in her handling of the goalkeeping duties. Starting in every game, she boasts an 0.58 goals against average and has recorded three solo shutouts this season and combined with freshman Kathryn Masson to post a fourth.
The only team in the country to return two first team All-Americans, the Terps return the majority of a squad that reached the 2004 NCAA Tournament semifinal game while recording the program's fourth 20-win season. Going 20-4 overall, Maryland ended the year ranked fourth in the nation on offense while fielding the fifth-best defense in the country. Ranked third in the final NFHCA Top 20 poll, the Terps return 15 letterwinners, including nine starters.
Missy Meharg is in her 17th year as head coach of the Terrapins. Under her tutelage, she has led Maryland to two national titles and five ACC titles while putting together a 270-85-9 record. A four time National Coach of the Year, she has also guided the Terps to all four 20-win seasons while mentoring the team to 14 NCAA Tournament appearances and seven NCAA Tournament final fours.
Last Time Out
Maryland won both games of the Terrapin Invitational last weekend, shutting out Massachusetts and Northwestern, 6-0 and 2-0, respectively. Junior Tiffany Marsh scored the game winner in both games.
The Terps led 4-0 in the first half against the Minutewomen who had just two shots in the game, both coming in the first half. Maryland had 28 shots and 12 penalty corners. Junior All-American Jackie Ciconte capped off the team's scoring tallying back-to-back goals in the second half.
Junior All-American Lauren Powley had a goal and assisted on Tiffany Marsh's game-winning goal to lead the Terps to the win over the Wildcats. The Maryland defense was outstanding and impenetrable, not allowing a shot or a penalty corner to Northwestern.
Injury Update
Senior co-captain Kristin Harris was hit in the wrist with the ball in the first half of the game against UMass and was forced to miss the rest of the game. While x-rays looked good, Harris sat out the Terps' contest with Northwestern for precautionary reasons. She is listed as day-to-day.
Harris is a two-time captain of the squad. She had played in every game since coming to campus, a streak of 73-consecutive contests, before sitting out the match against the Minutewomen.
A Look at Towson
The Tigers won their first game of the season, pounding on St. Francis (Pa.), 13-0, on Saturday. Julie Lambi scored a school-record four goals in the game to lead Towson to victory. The team's losses have all been on the road, including a 12-0 thumping from Duke.
Senior Julie Lambi is the Tigers' all-time leading scorer with 86 career points and 33 goals. Her four goals this season ties with fellow senior Ashley Bacon for the team lead. In goal, sophomore Christina Armer has started all five games for Towson. She carries a 3.18 goals against average and a .717 save percentage.
Head coach Lynette Mitzel is in her eighth season. A 1992 graduate of Penn State, she has put together a 45-98 record. She has overseen the Tigers' move from the America East to the Colonial Athletic Association. In 2002, she led Towson to 10 wins, the second-most win total in school history.
Last Meeting: Caroline Walter scored four goals as the Terps went on to a 7-1 rout at Towson. The defense limited the Tigers to just one goal and two shots as the reigning national champs claimed its 27th-straight victory.
Series vs. Towson: Maryland has never lost to the Tigers, leading the all-time series, 24-0-2. The Terps have scored as many as 10 goals in the series (10-1 win in 1999) and were shutout just once - a 0-0 tie in 1977. The other tie was a 2-2 stalemate in the first game of the series in 1974.
Barbieri Moves Up Record Books
A 2002 first team All-American, senior Colleen Barbieri has amassed 46 goals over her career, 10th on Maryland's all-time list. She trails Rachel Hiskins and Nadine Bennett who are both tied for eighth on the list with 49 goals each. Barbieri, the 2001 ACC Rookie of the Year, notched 17 goals her freshman year, a career high. Carla Tagliente holds the school record with 73 tallies which she scored from 1997-2000.
Barbieri has also collected 107 career points, just four points away from tying for 10th place on the all-time list.
Terp Attack
After scoring just five goals in two games in Boston in the season-opening weekend, the Terps have exploded for 21 goals in the last four games. Boasting a balanced attack, 10 different Terps have tallied at least a goal with junior All-American Jackie Ciconte leading the way with six. The Maryland offense has outscored its opponents, 26-3, so far this season.
The Terps' high-powered attack from a year ago returns intact. Ranked fourth in the nation in 2003, Maryland scored 92 goals on the season with four players scoring at least 15 goals each. Sophomore All-American Paula Infante was the team's leader with 19 tallies, followed by senior Anja Boettcher with 18. Junior All-American Jackie Ciconte contributed 17 goals and senior Colleen Barbieri, a 2002 first team All-American, knocked in 15 on the year.
Defense!
What jumped right off the box score after Sunday's 2-0 win over Northwestern was the fact that the Maryland defense did not allow a Wildcat shot or a penalty corner for the game. The Terps have been almost impenetrable since the 3-2 overtime win vs. Boston College. Since that game, the Terps have allowed just one goal, posting four shutouts in the last five games. The defense put together a streak of 191 minutes of shutout hockey, which was snapped in the win over Drexel. Every Maryland opponent has been limited to three shots or fewer in every game and one penalty corner or less four times.
Nifty (Hat) Trick
Senior Anja Boettcher scored her second-career hat trick in the 7-1 win over Drexel. She was also the last Terrapin to record a hat trick when she scored three in the 7-0 victory at UMass last year on Aug. 31. No other current Terp has scored a hat trick in their careers.
Terps in Openers
The Terrapins are 26-3-2 in season openers since program's first year in 1974. Maryland went unbeaten the first 15 years, going 13-0-2 before losing back-to-back openers in 1989 (at Virginia) and 1990 (at Old Dominion). UM has won the last eight opening games of the season.
When opening the home slate, the Terps are 25-4-2 all-time, having won the last five home openers in a row.
Home Sweet Home
The Terps continue to own the home field following its dominance at home last year. Maryland is undefeated so far in College Park, going 4-0, allowing just one goal and recording three shutouts.
Maryland went 13-1 last year on the brand new, state-of-the-art Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. The wins included eight victories against teams ranked in the national top 20 at the time of the meeting with three of those coming over top 10 squads. The Terps' only loss on the new turf was to eventual NCAA Champion Wake Forest.
Aye, Aye Captain
Seniors Kristin Harris and Sara Silvetti have been named team captains for the second-straight year. The two Pennsylvania natives have played in almost every game since 2001. Last year, both were named to the NFHCA Mid-Atlantic All-Region team.
Up Next
Maryland is back on the road for two crucial non-conference games before opening the conference slate. The Terps start the three-game road swing at Princeton on Friday, Sept. 17 then travel to Maryland head coach Missy Meharg's alma mater Delaware on Sunday, Sept. 19.
