Terp Women Place 14th in Fall Opener

HANAHAN, S.C. - Sophomore Kate Stepanek finished in a tie for 22nd place with a three-round total of 224, leading University of Maryland finishers Tuesday at the Cougar Classic women's golf tournament hosted by the College of Charleston.
The tournament marked the fall season-opener for the Maryland women's golf team, which sent three sophomores and two freshmen on the trip.
Stepanek carded a 77 on Tuesday, the best round of the day by a Terrapin. She finished the tournament with 11 birdies in 54 holes, tied for third for most birdies among the 84-player field.
As a team, Maryland shot 314 in Tuesday's final round, finishing 14th overall at 931. The Terps were only six strokes out of a 12th-place tie between Kentucky and Richmond.
Also for Maryland on Tuesday, sophomore Jessica Reno and freshman Katie Trotter each finished at 238, tying for 67th place. Trotter shot a 78 on Tuesday, while Reno had an 80. Sophomore Kelly MacWhinnie shot a 79 Tuesday to tie for 73rd at 241, with freshman Kelly Calkin at 243 with a tie for 77th.
LSU shot a 290 on Tuesday to claim the team title, scoring a three-stroke victory over Tennessee. Virginia's Rachel Smith fired a 4-under-par 68 to win medalist honors with a 4-under total of 212. She won by one shot over Tennessee's Violeta Retamoza and two shots over Vicky Meyer of LSU and Leah Wigger of Virginia.
Maryland next plays on October 2 and 3 at the Nittany Lion Fall Invitational at Penn State.
