Terps Embark on Two-Game Road Swing
A two-game road swing to Princeton and Delaware launches a three-game stretch where the Terps are away from the friendly confines of home. The Tigers host Maryland at 6 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 17. The Terps then travel down to No. 14 Delaware to wrap up the weekend on Sunday, Sept. 19 at 1 p.m.
Maryland puts its undefeated streak on the line when it faces Princeton. The Tigers have just one win under their belt, but all three of their losses have come to teams ranked in the top 15 in the nation. Two of the setbacks were decided by two goals or less. Princeton is also looking to avenge a 3-2 overtime loss in College Park last year.
Delaware faces its third top-three opponent when it hosts the Terps. The game will mark a homecoming for head coach Missy Meharg who was a player at Delaware from 1981-84. The Blue Hens host St. Joseph's before Sunday's matchup.
Terps on TV
Maryland's Sept. 17 game at Princeton will be televised by CSTV making it the second-straight year a Terrapin field hockey game will be broadcast. Last year, the Terps' 3-1 win over Ohio State on Oct. 5 was broadcast by the same network. This year's game between the Terps and the Tigers will first air on Thursday, Sept. 23 at 8 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. and will be replayed several times until Oct. 8. Check DirecTV listings for more information.
A Look At The Terps
Once again, junior All-American Jackie Ciconte is the most efficient scorer on the team, scoring on 30.4 percent of her shots. She leads the team in goals and points with seven and 15, respectively. Classmate Tiffany Marsh also has a team-leading 15 points. Her five assists and three game-winning goals are the most on the squad.
Sophomore Christina Restivo continues to be solid in her handling of the goalkeeping duties. Starting in every game, she boasts an 0.51 goals against average and has recorded three solo shutouts this season and combined with freshman Kathryn Masson to post two more.
The only team in the country to return two first team All-Americans, the Terps return the majority of a squad that reached the 2004 NCAA Tournament semifinal game while recording the program's fourth 20-win season. Going 20-4 overall, Maryland ended the year ranked fourth in the nation on offense while fielding the fifth-best defense in the country. Ranked third in the final NFHCA Top 20 poll, the Terps return 15 letterwinners, including nine starters.
Missy Meharg is in her 17th year as head coach of the Terrapins. Under her tutelage, she has led Maryland to two national titles and five ACC titles while putting together a 271-85-9 record. A four time National Coach of the Year, she has also guided the Terps to all four 20-win seasons while mentoring the team to 14 NCAA Tournament appearances and seven NCAA Tournament final fours.
Last Time Out
Maryland cruised to a 6-0 victory over Towson on Tuesday night. Six different players scored goals as the team attempted a season-high 44 shots. For the second-consecutive game, the Terps did not allow a shot or a penalty corner to its opponent. Northwestern was blanked in both those categories on Sunday.
Senior Sara Silvetti scored the game-winning goal and with Colleen Barbieri's tally against Towson, she continues to inch her way up the Maryland record books. Freshman Janneke van Leeuwen also nothched her first-career goal.
Terps in the ACC Stats
With the Terps sporting a balanced attack where 11 different players have scored at least a goal, four players rank in the top 10 in the ACC in that category as of Sept. 13. Senior Anja Boettcher is tied for eighth with 0.83 gpg, while senior Sara Silvetti and junior Tiffany Marsh are tied for 10th, scoring 0.67 goals per game.
Ciconte (7th, 17), Marsh (T8th, 12) and Boettcher (T10th, 10) also appear in the top 10 in points. Harris was hit on the wrist with the ball in the first half of the game against UMass. She was forced to miss the rest of the match then sat out the game against the Wildcats the following day for precautionary reasons, missing the first game in her career.
Harris is a two-time captain of the squad. She had played in every game since coming to campus, a streak of 73-consecutive contests, before sitting out the match against the Minutewomen.
A Look at Princeton and Delaware
PRINCETON
Princeton comes into the game at 1-3. All three losses have come to teams ranked in this week's NFHCA Top 20 poll, with two of those teams ranked in the top 10. Two of its losses were by two goals or less.
The Tigers have scored just seven goals in four games, six of those coming in the 6-0 crushing of Ivy League opponent Yale. Junior Lauren Ehrlichman has scored three of the team's goals, recording a hat trick in the game vs. Yale.
Goalkeeper Juliana Simon has played every minute in goal and has a 2.00 goals against average. She also has 15 saves so far in her first season as a starter.
The Tigers lost just two letterwinners, both starters, from last year's team that went 12-6 on the season, won the Ivy League title and reached the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Of those returning is senior midfielder Natalie Martirosian who was a first team All-American last year. Kristen Holmes-Winn is in her second year as head coach of the Tigers. She is a 1997 graduate of Iowa.
Last Meeting: Maryland pulled out a 3-2 overtime win over Princeton last year at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. The Terps were ahead 2-0 in the second half when the Tigers scored two goals in the final three minutes of the game to force an overtime. The Terps outshot the Tigers, 8-1, in the extra period, but two penalty shots were awarded and Maryland was able to end the game on the second attempt with Paula Infante putting on the finishing touches.
Series vs. Princeton: Maryland leads the all-time series, 8-4-1, winning the last six-straight meetings. The games have been close with the last five games being decided by two goals or less and last year's matchup going to overtime. The Terps are also 3-1 in Princeton, N.J. The two teams have played one another every year since 1997.
DELAWARE
Ranked 14th in the season's first top 20 poll, the Blue Hens head into the weekend with a 3-2 record before hosting St. Joseph's on Friday. Their losses are against two teams ranked in the top three in the nation, dropping a 1-0 decision at Michigan State to open the season and a 5-1 game vs. North Carolina. On Sept. 5, Delaware defeated Princeton, 2-0.
The Blue Hens are looking to bounce back from a 6-12 season and 1-6 in the CAA for eighth place. UDel returns nine starters from last season's squad.
All three of Delaware's victories have been shutouts. In five games, the Blue Hens have scored 11 goals, led by senior Lauren Carr who has three goals. She also leads the team with eight points.
Delaware ranks 13th in the nation in defense, led by sophomore goalkeeper Megan Allen. She a 1.17 goals against average which is 14th-best in the country.
Last Meeting: Maryland scored four goals in the second half to post the win over No. 15 Delaware. Colleen Barbieri scored the game-winning goal to break up the scoreless tie in the 48th minute. Anja Boettcher had two tallies in the game.
Series vs. Delaware: Maryland is ahead in the all-time series, 16-10-2, as the teams have played every year since 1974. The Terps have won the last five meetings, outscoring the Blue Hens, 22-2, during that span.
Barbieri Moves Up Record Books
A 2002 first team All-American, senior Colleen Barbieri has amassed 47 goals over her career, 10th on Maryland's all-time list. She trails Rachel Hiskins and Nadine Bennett who are both tied for eighth on the list with 49 goals each. Barbieri, the 2001 ACC Rookie of the Year, notched 17 goals her freshman year, a career high. Carla Tagliente holds the school record with 73 tallies which she scored from 1997-2000.
Barbieri has also collected 109 career points, just two points away from tying for 10th place on the all-time list.
Terps Ranked Second
In the season's first top 20 poll, the Maryland Terrapins were ranked No. 2 in the nation by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association, the highest ranking of any ACC team this week.
The ACC continues to be the strongest conference in the nation as four ACC squads are ranked in the top five while all five are in the top 10. The only non-ACC team ranked in the top five is No. 1 Michigan State.
Terp Attack
After scoring just five goals in two games in Boston in the season-opening weekend, the Terps have exploded for 27 goals in the last five games. Boasting a balanced attack, 11 different Terps have tallied at least a goal with junior All-American Jackie Ciconte leading the way with seven. The Maryland offense has outscored its opponents, 32-3, so far this season.
Maryland's offense ranks seventh in the nation as of Sept. 13, with 4.15 goals per game.
The Terps' high-powered attack from a year ago returns intact. Ranked fourth in the nation in 2003, Maryland scored 92 goals on the season with four players scoring at least 15 goals each. Sophomore All-American Paula Infante was the team's leader with 19 tallies, followed by senior Anja Boettcher with 18. Junior All-American Jackie Ciconte contributed 17 goals and senior Colleen Barbieri, a 2002 first team All-American, knocked in 15 on the year.
Defense!
What jumped right off the box score after Sunday's 2-0 win over Northwestern was the fact that the Maryland defense did not allow a Wildcat shot or a penalty corner for the game and repeated that feat in the very next game vs. Towson. The Terps have been almost impenetrable since the 3-2 overtime win vs. Boston College. Since that game, the Terps have allowed just one goal, posting five shutouts in the last six games. The defense put together a streak of 191 minutes of shutout hockey, which was snapped in the win over Drexel. Every Maryland opponent has been limited to three shots or fewer in every game and one penalty corner or less four times.
With five shutouts under their belt, the Terrapin defense is tied for second in the nation as of Sept. 13, allowing just 0.50 goals per game.
Nifty (Hat) Trick
Senior Anja Boettcher scored her second-career hat trick in the 7-1 win over Drexel. She was also the last Terrapin to record a hat trick when she scored three in the 7-0 victory at UMass last year on Aug. 31. No other current Terp has scored a hat trick in their careers.
Terps in Openers
The Terrapins are 26-3-2 in season openers since program's first year in 1974. Maryland went unbeaten the first 15 years, going 13-0-2 before losing back-to-back openers in 1989 (at Virginia) and 1990 (at Old Dominion). UM has won the last eight opening games of the season.
When opening the home slate, the Terps are 25-4-2 all-time, having won the last five home openers in a row.
Home Sweet Home
The Terps continue to own the home field following its dominance at home last year. Maryland is undefeated so far in College Park, going 5-0, allowing just one goal and recording four shutouts.
Maryland went 13-1 last year on the brand new, state-of-the-art Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. The wins included eight victories against teams ranked in the national top 20 at the time of the meeting with three of those coming over top 10 squads. The Terps' only loss on the new turf was to eventual NCAA Champion Wake Forest.
Aye, Aye Captain
Seniors Kristin Harris and Sara Silvetti have been named team captains for the second-straight year. The two Pennsylvania natives have played in almost every game since 2001. Last year, both were named to the NFHCA Mid-Atlantic All-Region team.
Up Next
A big matchup is next on the slate as the Terps travel to No. 5 Wake Forest. The Deacons are the two-time defending NCAA and ACC champions and Maryland has not defeated them in the last four meetings. The game is also taking place at the site of the NCAA Tournament Final Four which WFU plays host to on Nov. 19 and 21.
