College Park, Md. - The University of Maryland women's soccer team will look to upset the No. 3 ranked team in the nation, according to the latest NSCAA/adidas poll, for the second consecutive game when the Washington Huskies visit Ludwig Field Friday night for a 7:00 p.m. match.
In their last outing the Terps stunned the third-ranked UCLA Bruins at the Virginia Soccer Classic by a 2-1 margin. Maryland scored twice in the first half, but UCLA pressured the Terrapin defense throughout the second half. Sophomore goalkeeper Nikki Resnick turned away eight Bruin shots to preserve the victory.
The win over UCLA marked the sixth consecutive year Maryland has scored a victory over a top 25 team. The last time the Terrapins beat a team in the top 10 was October 13, 2001, when Maryland beat Clemson 1-0 in overtime.
The junior combo of Mallory Mahar and Kimmy Francis lead the Terrapin offensive attack. Mahar is tops on the squad in goals with four, while Francis leads the team in assists with four. Freshmen Kelly Rozumalski and Nataly Arias have steeped up their level of play for the Terps. Rozumalski netted her first two collegiate goals at the Virginia Soccer Classic, one each against South Carolina and UCLA, while Arias notched her first collegiate goal in the Terps' 5-2 win over the Gamecocks.
The Washington Huskies enter the match with a 5-0-0 record on the 2004 season the top ranking in the West Region this week, taking that spot from UCLA. Last week Washington registered shutouts in both outings, blanking UAB 1-0 on Sept. 10 and beating Weber State 2-0 on Sept. 12.
No Huskie player has more than two goals or two assists on the season. In fact, the Huskies have only scored nine goals in their five matches, but have only allowed three goals on 53 shots. The trip to College Park is part of a 10-match road trip, which also includes a match against Loyola on Sunday at Ludwig Field.
Maryland and Washington have met once before, in the 2003 season opener. The Huskies won that match 2-1 in overtime.
