Terps Open Home Slate
Maryland opens the home season with the first of two highly-anticipated matches against perennial power Old Dominion on Saturday, Sept. 4 at 1 p.m. The second game of the home-and-home series takes place on Oct. 15 in Norfolk, Va. The Terps are looking for the same success from a year ago, when Maryland swept the home-and-home series against ODU which began in 1999.
Following their match with Old Dominion, the Terps host Drexel to close out the weekend on Sunday, Sept. 5 at 1 p.m. It is the fourth-consecutive year the teams will be meeting in College Park.
The two games this weekend mark the beginning of a five-game home stretch for Maryland. Next weekend, the UMD hosts the eighth-annual Terrapin Invitational.
Terps on TV
Maryland's Sept. 17 game at Princeton will be televised by CSTV making it the second-straight year a Terrapin field hockey game will be broadcast. Last year, the Terps' 3-1 win over Ohio State on Oct. 5 was broadcast by the same network. This year's game between the Terps and the Tigers will first air on Thursday, Sept. 23 at 8 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. and will be replayed several times until Oct. 8. Check DirecTV listings for more information.
A Look At The Terps
Junior Tiffany Marsh was moved to an attacking midfield position this season and, after the first weekend of play, she leads the Terps with two goals and four points. Junior All-American Lauren Powley has a goal and an assist for three points. She scored the game-winning goal in the 2-0 win over Boston University.
Sophomore Christina Restivo has played all 140:00 minutes in goal, posting her first-career shutout win against the Terriers. She boasts a 1.28 goals against average.
The only team in the country to return two first team All-Americans, the Terps return the majority of a squad that reached the 2004 NCAA Tournament semifinal game while recording the program's fourth 20-win season. Going 20-4 overall, Maryland ended the year ranked fourth in the nation on offense while fielding the fifth-best defense in the country. Ranked third in the final NFHCA Top 20 poll, the Terps return 15 letterwinners, including nine starters.
Missy Meharg is in her 17th year as head coach of the Terrapins. Under her tutelage, she has led Maryland to two national titles and five ACC titles while putting together a 266-85-9 record. A four time National Coach of the Year, she has also guided the Terps to all four 20-win seasons while mentoring the team to 14 NCAA Tournament appearances and seven NCAA Tournament final fours.
Last Time Out
The Terps swept their opening weekend in New England, defeating future ACC opponent Boston College, 3-2, in overtime, then downing Boston University, 2-0.
Against the Eagles, the Terps trailed 1-0 at the break, but junior Tiffany Marsh tied the game up early in the second period. BC went ahead again, 2-1, however, junior All-American Jackie Ciconte snuck a goal into the back of the net with about three minutes left in regulation to send the game into overtime. In the extra period, Marsh slammed home the game-winning goal for the Terps' first win of the season.
The following day, the Terrapins scored both their goals in the first half and outshot the Terriers, 28-3, taking a 2-0 win. The Terps also held a 9-1 edge on penalty corners. Junior All-American Lauren Powley scored the game-winning goal with about 13 minutes left on the clock in the first half on a penalty corner. Senior Colleen Barbieri tallied the insurance goal with less than five minutes left in the period. Sophomore Christina Restivo posted her first-career shutout win.
A Look at Old Dominion, Drexel
OLD DOMINION
The Lady Monarchs are coming off a 2-1 win at Penn State last weekend. Darcy Pinchbeck scored a goal 10 seconds before the final horn to give Old Dominion the season-opening victory. ODU has been out of action since that thrilling win on Aug. 28.
Last year, Old Dominion went 14-10 on the season and 7-1 in the CAA, capturing its eight-straight conference tournament crown. The Lady Monarchs return five starters from last year's squad that reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament and 11 letterwinners overall. Of those returning, junior Janelle Engle was named second team All-CAA last year. ODU loses two All-Americans in Angie Loy and Melissa Leonetti. Loy was the team's goal (24), point (69) and assist (21) leader and was the nation's fourth-best goal scorer and while ranking No. 2 in points.
Legendary head coach Beth Anders returns to the Old Dominion sidelines after taking a year off to coach the U.S. National Team. She is in her 22nd season at the ODU helm, having led the Lady Monarchs to nine national titles. The nation's winningest coach, she has amassed a 430-64-7 career record all in Norfolk, Va.
Last Meeting: The No. 4 Terps held on for a 3-2 win over No. 7 Old Dominion at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex on Oct. 18, 2003. The win gave Maryland its first-ever regular-season sweep in the home-and-home series which began in 1999. It was also the first time since 1995 the Terps had defeated ODU twice in the same season. Maryland had a 2-0 lead at the break and then a 3-0 lead late in the second period before ODU's late surge to get to within one in the final 10 minutes of the game. Christina Restivo made her first-career start in goal, making a career-high five saves. Anja Boettcher scored two of Maryland's goals to lift the team to the win.
Series vs. Old Dominion: Old Dominion is the only non-conference squad, and one of just two teams, to own a winning record against the Terps. They lead the all-time series, 20-12-1. The regular-season home-and-home series began in 1999 and last year was the first time the Terps swept the series. In 1994, the teams played to a 1-1 tie.
DREXEL
Drexel comes into this weekend's action at 2-0. Both its victories have been one-goal margins, with the Dragons winning their season opener vs. LaSalle, 2-1. They followed up with a 3-2 overtime victory over Bucknell on Aug. 31.
Junior Elizabeth Seidel leads the team with two goals, one of those was the game-winner vs. the Bison. Senior Katie Dougherty has played all 140 minutes in goal and sports a 1.50 goals against average. The Dragons return 16 letterwinners and six starters from last year's 6-12 squad.
Last Meeting: The Terps cruised to an easy 6-0 win over Drexel last year. Jackie Ciconte and Anja Boettcher each tallied two goals apiece as Maryland put the game away early on, scoring four in the first period.
Series vs. Drexel: The young series dates back to 2001 with the teams meeting the last three years. Maryland has not allowed a goal to the Dragons as it has outscored them, 15-0, in the three games. All three meetings have taken place in College Park.
Barbieri Moves Up Record Books
A 2002 first team All-American, senior Colleen Barbieri has amassed 45 goals over her career, 10th on Maryland's all-time list. She trails Rachel Hiskins and Nadine Bennett who are both tied for eighth on the list with 49 goals each. Barbieri, the 2001 ACC Rookie of the Year, notched 17 goals her freshman year, a career high. Carla Tagliente holds the school record with 73 tallies which she scored from 1997-2000.
Barbieri has also collected 107 career points, just four points away from tying for 10th place on the all-time list.
Former `Mates Square Off
Formerly a Lady Monarch, assistant coach Marybeth Freeman will face her old squad when the Terps play Old Dominion on Saturday, Sept. 4. A 2003 graduate, Freeman lettered for four years at ODU as a goalkeeper. A four-year starter, she helped the team to an 81-17 record during her career there and was a two-time All-CAA honoree. Old Dominion won its ninth national title with Freeman in the net in 2000.
Freeman has won the first two meetings between the teams since she's joined the Terrapin staff. Last year, Maryland swept the regular-season series.
Terp Attack
The Terps' high-powered attack from a year ago returns intact. Ranked fourth in the nation in 2003, Maryland scored 92 goals on the season with four players scoring at least 15 goals each. Sophomore All-American Paula Infante was the team's leader with 19 tallies, followed by senior Anja Boettcher with 18. Junior All-American Jackie Ciconte contributed 17 goals and senior Colleen Barbieri, a 2002 first team All-American, knocked in 15 on the year.
It seems like junior Tiffany Marsh's move to an attacking position is already paying off. After two games, she leads the team with two goals. Junior All-American Lauren Powley has a goal and an assist for three points.
Terps in Openers
The Terrapins are 26-3-2 in season openers since program's first year in 1974. Maryland went unbeaten the first 15 years, going 13-0-2 before losing back-to-back openers in 1989 (at Virginia) and 1990 (at Old Dominion). UM has won the last eight opening games of the season.
When opening the home slate, the Terps are 24-4-2 all-time, having won the last five home openers in a row.
Home Sweet Home
Maryland went 13-1 last year on the brand new, state-of-the-art Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. The wins included eight victories against teams ranked in the national top 20 at the time of the meeting with three of those coming over top 10 squads. The Terps' only loss on the new turf was to eventual NCAA Champion Wake Forest.
Aye, Aye Captain
Seniors Kristin Harris and Sara Silvetti have been named team captains for the second-straight year. The two Pennsylvania natives have started in 69-career games over three years. Last year, both were named to the NFHCA Mid-Atlantic All-Region team.
