DURHAM, N.C. - In its first conference match of the 2004 season, the University of Maryland volleyball team was defeated by Duke, 3-1 (26-30, 30-26, 30-20, 30-27), Friday night at Cameron Indoor Stadium. With the loss, the Terps are now 5-6 (0-1 ACC) on the year, while Duke improved to 10-3 (1-1 ACC).

Maria DiLivio, Sarah Treadwell and Rachel Wagener all had 15 kills for the Terps. Treadwell and DiLivio notched double-doubles with 18 and 17 digs, respectively. Stephanie Smith was also in double digits for kills with 12, and also had six blocks.

Freshman Beth Gillming posted a career-high 22 digs in a solid defensive effort. Aimee Huddleston dished out 55 assists and also added 12 digs, four kills and two blocks.

Serving and blocking were crucial for the Terps in game one, as Rachel Moore tallied two aces and Rachel Wagener added another and Stephanie Smith posted two blocks. Maria DiLivio led the way on offense in the first game with six kills, and the Terps outhit the Blue Devils, .234 to .190 to take the game by a score of 30-26.

Sarah Treadwell opened the second game with two kills and Maryland raced out to an 8-2 lead, prompting a timeout from Duke coach Jolene Nagel. The Blue Devils battled back to tie the game at 16 and never trailed again and, despite both outblocking (five to one) and outhitting (.196 to .172) the Blue Devils, the Terps were not able to capitalize and fell in the second game, 30-26.

Maryland struggled offensively in game three, hitting just .130, and fell by a score of 30-20. The Terps improved their hitting percentage in game four, as they hit .245, but the Blue Devil attack managed to hit .340 and Duke won the fourth and decisive game, 30-27.

Maryland continues its conference slate tomorrow with a 6 p.m. match at Wake Forest.
