HOUSTON - The University of Maryland volleyball team dropped its second match of the Houston Invitational to the host Cougars, 3-2 (30-20, 22-30, 24-30, 30-27, 10-15), Friday night. With the loss, the Terrapins are now 0-2 on the season, while Houston improved to 1-0. Sarah Treadwell led Maryland, registering her second-straight double-double with 19 kills and 10 digs. Treadwell hit .233 and also had three blocks on the night. Maria DiLivio and Rachel Wagener tallied 15 and 10 kills, respectively. DiLivio also had nine digs, while Wagener had eight blocks. Stephanie Smith posted a career-high 10 blocks. She also hit a team-high .353 with seven kills. Maryland had 20 total team blocks in defeat. Trailing 8-10 in game one, the Terps got their blocking going as Stephanie Smith and Jennifer Dewalt came up with successive solo blocks to tie the score, then teamed up for another to give the Terps the lead, 11-10. From there, the Terps never trailed and took the game by a score of 30-20. The Terrapins fell behind in early in game two by as many as four points, but worked their way back with strong blocking and solid defense to tie the score, 15-15. Houston, however, would go on to dominate most of the rest of the game and take it by a score of 30-23. In game three, the Cougars again took control and pulled away to win the game by a score of 30-24. The fourth game, however, would belong to Maryland. At game point with freshman Beth Gillming serving, a DiLivio kill forced a fifth and decisive game. Houston held the initial edge in the final game as it led, 8-5, at the point where the teams switch sides of the court, and went on to seal the victory with a 15-10 fifth-game win. Stephanie Doiron, starting her second match at libero for the Terps, posted 13 digs. Jennifer Dewalt had six kills and digs, while senior setter Aimee Huddleston had an all-around effort with five kills, 48 assists, eight digs and six blocks. Houston was led by Kelly McAnelly, who had 24 kills and 10 digs. Maryland returns to the court Saturday for a match with 10th-ranked California. The Bears have yet to be beaten at the Houston Invitational or on the season. The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. central time, 2 p.m. eastern.
