Terps Win In Virginia

Charlottesville, VA - The five game match against the Cavaliers was the second of a two-game road swing in Virginia this weekend. The loss leaves Virginia 7-6, 2-2 in the ACC. The Terps have won 20 of their last 21 matches.
Maryland had 80 kills overall and were led by sophomore Jade Brown (.432) with 19. Blocking was pivotal for Maryland posting 29 for the match to Virginia's 15. Beth Gillming and Maggie Schmelzle both had double-doubles for the match.
Coach Janice Kruger said, "Virginia played extremely well. They made good adjustments that changed our block and defense. I'm proud of our play and the way we stayed in and fought."
Maryland opened with a 4-1 lead in the first game and it appeared the Terps were on the way to dominate. Stephanie Smith led with five kills in the first game. Rachel Wagener, Jade Brown, Maggie Schmelzle, Beth Gillming all had key kills in the first game bringing the hitting percentage to .471 for the Terps. Setters Teryn Papp and Tedi Doucet were even at seven with assists. Maryland won the first game 30-16.
The Cavaliers came out strong in the second game and tested the Terps offense with powerful serving. Cavalier Shannon Davis had the game high of five kills (.714) and Virginia won the second game 24-30.
In the third game, the teams were even with 17 kills, but Maryland's 10 blocks brought in the edge for the team. The Terps were behind most of the third game till two pivotal kills came by Schmelzle to bring the Terps even at 18-18. Beth Gillming and Mary Beth Brown were strong defensively to ultimately hand the Terps a win at 30-26..
Maryland led out of the gate in the fourth game and was strong offensively. The Cavaliers brought the game to a tie at 11-11 and gained momentum. Strong serving by Sarah Kirkwood paved the way for a more comfortable lead late in the third when the Cavs' went up 23-27 and won the game 26-30.
The Terps were solid in the fifth and final game. Key serving and setting by Teryn Papp led the team and Jade Brown and Beth Gillming had key kills. Gillming had a key kill at to go ahead 10-6 and the Terps ultimately won at 15-12.
Next weekend, the Terps continue their road conference series and play Georgia Tech on October 7th and against Clemson on October 8th in South Carolina. The Terps will return home on Friday, October 14th against Wake Forest at 6:00 p.m. just prior to Midnight Madness.
