
Maryland Sweeps Duke

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Stephanie Smith's 14 kills led the Terrapins to a three game sweep (31-29, 31-29, 30-18) against Duke today in at the Comcast Center, as the win improves Maryland's record to 17-1 and 8-1 in the ACC. The senior middle blocker hit a stunning.765 for the match and had four blocks.
The Terps played a strong defensive match and hit .320 against the Blue Devils. Libero Stephanie Doiron led with 17 digs and freshman Maggie Schmelzle had 14. Sophomore outside hitter Jade Brown had another powerful performance with 12 kills for the team.
The Blue Devils were kept to .171 hitting percentage for the match. Carrie DeMange had a double-double for Duke with 17 kills and 11 digs. The loss leaves Duke 11-6 (5-4 ACC).
"Duke was ranked first in the ACC in the preseason poll," coach Janice Kruger commented. "We had a lot of intensity in the match. Our serving was strong and they played very aggressively. All of these games are crucial for us and our standing within the ACC."
In the opening game, the Terps fell behind quickly 3-8 when a kill by Smith sparked the offensive effort. The Terps shot back five straight points with a service ace by Beth Gillming and kills by Mary Beth Brown and Smith. A block by Mary Beth Brown built the lead to 16-14, but Duke's Carrie DeMange responded with a kill. The Terps seemed to take command as they led by as much as six points. At 26-20, Duke's Tealle Hunkus had a kill and the Terps had some errors which brought the Blue Devils back within one. Maryland had three game points and finally closed out the game on a kill by Rachel Wagener to finish 31-29.
The two teams competed fiercely in the second game as the Terps built a small lead 6-5 on a block by M.B. Brown. Maryland extended its lead to 16-11 when Ali Hausfeld set DeMange for a kill. Hausfeld had 28 sets for Duke in the game. The Terps had a net error and a double contact error called which brought Duke within two at 25-23. Gillming dove at the far end of the court for a dig and Schmelzle drained the ball to go up 26-23. The Blue Devils utilized Hausfeld and she set Jourdan Norman for the kill. The Terps had a missed block and another net error and the game was tied at 29-29. Stephanie Smith had a kill and Duke's error gave Maryland the win at 31-29.
The Terps jumped off to a 6-1 lead on a kill by Beth Gillming and an ace by Schmelzle. The teams rallied on both sides and junior setter Teryn Papp set Jade Brown for a kill to go up 14-7. Maryland went on an eight point run on Tedi Doucet's serve to build its lead to 24-14. The Terps dominated the rest of the game with a kill by Mary Beth Brown and a kill from Wagener to win it 30-18.
The Terps play at Boston College Tuesday night and return home for a Friday night match against North Carolina (13-6, 8-1 ACC).
