
Maryland Sweeps Boston College

Chestnut Hill, MA. - The University of Maryland women's volleyball team swept Boston College, 3-0 tonight (30-27, 30-16, 30-28) as the Terrapins record stands as the best in the ACC at 9-1, (18-1 overall). The win marks the eleventh time the Terps have beaten teams 3-0 this year and the loss drops the Eagles to 1-9 ACC, (6-13 overall).
Off to one of their best starts in season history, the Terps have won 24 of their last 26 matches. Maryland is listed 26th in this week's AVCA/CSTV Division I Coaches Poll.
"We had a good overall effort tonight," remarked coach Janice Kruger. "Our blocking was strong and the team fought for a lot of points. We played very aggressively and it showed."
Maryland out hit Boston College tonight .298 to .104 and leveraged its kills (59-39), blocks (14-3) and digs (59-51).
Outside hitter Maggie Schmelzle had a double-double for the night, posting her seventh for the year and a season-high for the Terps. Four Terrapins hit ten or more kills including the game-high by Rachel Wagener (15), Jade Brown (12), Maggie Schmelzle (11), and Stephanie Smith (10).
The Terps led the entire first game with Boston College coming within one point three times. At 9-7, Jade Brown had a kill followed by Wagener to give the Terps an 11-7 lead. Libero Stephanie Doiron had an impressive 7 digs in the first game which kept the Eagles at bay. The Terps extended their lead at 25-21 on a kill by Stephanie Smith who hit .588 for the night. Abigail Hasebroock of the Eagles responded with a kill to bring the Eagles to 28-27. An attack by Jade Brown and an error by the Eagles brought the game to a close for the Terps at 30-27.
Brown opened the second game on a kill from a pinpoint set by senior Teryn Papp. The Terps quickly shot out to a 9-4 lead and never let up. Maryland's top-ranking in blocking in the ACC showed as the Terps had seven blocks for the second game while the Eagles were not able to convert any. Mary Beth Brown and Smith had a block to bring the Terps to 22-11. The Terps held the Eagles to 16 points and a .063 hitting percentage in the second game as Maryland hit .322. The Terps won the game after a block by Wagener and Schmelzle for the 30-16 win.
The Terps came out to a 7-2 lead as Smith and M.B. Brown shared a block. At 8-5, the Eagles scored four straight points before a service error gave Maryland a chance to take charge. The Eagles recorded another error after a save by Smith and a kill by Schmelzle to bring the Terps to 13-8. Beth Gillming's kill down the line lifted the Terps to 16-10 and Maryland was closing in at 24-18 when Schmelzle pounded another kill. Morgan Woodcock's serving brought the Eagles back into play and they scored five straight points, eventually bringing the game to 29-27. The Terps had two match points before a kill by Gillming and Smith landed the match and a win at 30-28.
Maryland (9-1 ACC, 18-1) will play North Carolina (8-1 ACC, 13-6 overall) in a match-up of first and second in the ACC Friday night at the Comcast Center. Game time is 7:00 p.m. Admission is free.
