COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Terrapin field hockey seniors Emily Beach and Lauren Powley have been selected to play in the 2005 NFHCA North/South Senior All-Star game, Saturday, Nov. 19 in Louisville, Ky. Both were selected to the South squad.
A co-captain, Beach (Bethesda, Md.) has been with the Terps for two seasons after transferring from Virginia. She has anchored the Terrapins' defense, starting every game in both of her seasons at Maryland. The backfield was ranked in the top 15 in the nation last year, as she helped Maryland reach the NCAA Tournament semifinals. This year, the No. 3 Terrapins boast the fifth-best defense in the nation. Beach has scored nine career-goals, three of which were game winners, and has 15 assists and 35 points in her collegiate career.
Also a co-captain, Powley (Mountaintop, Pa.) is arguably one of the best field hockey players in school history. She has been an All-American all three years, earning a spot on the first team in each of the last two seasons. She is also a two-time All-ACC honoree and ranks in the top 10 at Maryland in career assists. This fall, she helped the U.S. Junior National team to its best-ever finish in the Junior World Cup, placing seventh in the tournament in Santiago, Chile. Powley was also a member of the Senior National Team this summer, earning a starting position. In her four-year career at Maryland, Powley has scored 10 goals, dished out 31 assists and collected 51 points.
The game is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. start and will be played on the campus of the University of Louisville, who is host to the NCAA Tournament semifinal and finals.
Maryland closes out the ACC-regular season schedule, traveling to North Carolina on Sunday, Oct. 23, 2005. Its final regular-season contest is slated for Wednesday, Oct. 26 at American.
