Postgame Quotes: No. 3 Virginia Tech 28, Maryland 9

Oct. 20, 2005

Recap |  Final Stats |  Notes

Maryland Head Coach Ralph Friedgen
On the game:
"I think we played hard and we had the opportunities, but we didn't take advantage of them. When we had the ball with good field position after turning them over, we weren't able to come away with any points. That was really the difference in the game.

"Our defense was on the field too long and they began to wear down (toward the end of the game]. They are a good football team, and when [ou play that caliber of a team, you have to cash in on opportunities to win the football game."

"I think it was a good learning experience and I hope we will be better for it."

On Quarterback Sam Hollenbach:
"Sam has a sprain in his non-throwing shoulder, but I'm not sure how much it affected him tonight. The fact that he hung in there and led us to a score in the end shows how much heart he has. He showed me something out there tonight."

"I do think he got rattled on the first rush and the first interception. He's got to learn from this also."

On defending the run:
"They have speed and when they put the ball in [Marcus] Vick's hands, he can run. I thought the major difference in the two teams was they had a lot more speed. [Vick] has great acceleration and does not need a lot of room to run."

Maryland Wide Receiver Derrick Fenner
On the game:
"The loss definitely hurts. Last year they blew us out, this year we hung in there better but we missed out on a lot of opportunities. We were in the red zone a few times and we should have scored. We just didn't capitalize on their mistakes. If we want to win we have to take advantage of that."

On what can be learned from this game:
"We just have to learn to play tougher. We also have to limit our mistakes, play harder and take advantage of our opponents' turnovers. We have to take those turnovers and turn them into points. If you can't do that, you can't win the game and that is what happened tonight."

Maryland Cornerback Josh Wilson
On Marcus Vick:
"Being a young quarterback you can get rustled back there in the pocket. With time he is going to learn to play better and sit back in the pocket. He is a great quarterback, we were hoping to get pressure on him. We got him flustered tonight, then he flustered all the way down the field on us."

On the first half:
"We felt like we were really in control of the game, even when the score read 7-to-3. We had a lot of opportunities we could have made. We were excited because we thought we were about to shock the number three team in the nation. Sometimes the ball doesn't fall in your corner."

Virginia Tech Head Coach Frank Beamer
On the game:
"I thought we played a football team that was well prepared. The atmosphere was really something else. I think we have to draw on what we did well. From that standpoint, our offense came back in the second half. I feel fortunate getting out of here with a win. I really thought our guys hung in there and played hard."

On a season-high four turnovers:
"I think it's a credit to our defense to be able to stop them after turnovers on our side of the 50-yard line. Turnovers on the one-yard line are also hard to overcome. That's not us."

On how the game helped our team:
"I think we can learn from this game and be better. That's the thing to take away from here. I draw on the good stuff that happened like the offense taking us down the field in the second half and the defense stopping them after turnovers, but I also see some things that we can do better."

On Quarterback Marcus Vick:
"He certainly made a difference in this ballgame. There's no doubt about that. The only thing I said to him coming off the field [in the first half] was you're going to win this thing for us. I believe in him. I believe he is a great competitor. I like what he's all about."

Virginia Tech Running Back Mike Imoh
On his fourth-and-one fumble:
"I was just trying to make a play and get in the end zone. I tried to go over the top and stretch the ball out, but someone knocked it out. It's my fault, I have to make the play."

On the first drive of the second half:
"It's a huge drive. All the momentum was in their favor. For us to come down the field and get seven points is a testament to the coaching staff and how hard we play."

Virginia Tech Quarterback Marcus Vick
On his three interceptions:
"They were a couple of forced throws. We got the win, so it doesn't matter. But otherwise, the three interceptions made my night horrible. I don't like that at all. When I throw an interception, I just upset myself."

On rushing for 133 yards:
"I just wanted to pick up some yardage. A couple of them were designed runs, but for the most part, I was just trying to get whatever I could get."

On the first drive of the second half:
"It was really big. It set the tempo for the second half. It quieted the crowd down and just got our guys going."
