Maggie Schmelzle led the Terps today with her eleventh double-double of the year as the Terps overcame the Seminoles 3-1 to improve Maryland's record to 13-1 in the ACC (22-1 overall) to stay first in the league. The loss for Florida State leaves the Seminoles 4-9 in the ACC (6-15 overall).
Schmelzle had 15 kills and 16 digs for the Terrapins. Rachel Wagener, Stephanie Smith and Jade Brown all had nine digs, while Stephanie Doiron led the team in digs with 25. Freshman Tedi Doucet had the game high of 28 sets for the team. The Terps sustained the win with a strong defensive effort with 14 blocks, while the hitting percentage for the team was .148.
"Florida State played a tough match," coach Janice Kruger commented. "We expect that all the matches in this part of the season will be challenging. Our defense was strong today which was key."
Florida State came out with a quick lead in the first game, but the Terps quickly tied it up at 3-3 on a service ace by Doiron. At 13-12, Maryland went on a five point run to go up 17-12. The Seminoles closed in bringing the game to a tie at 27-27, but a service error by FSU and a block by Wagener and Aramburu brought the game to 29-27 in the Terps' favor. The Terrapins won the game on a block by Wagener and Schmelzle, with the final game score of 30-27.
The Terps hit their match high of .230 in the second game. Wagener blocked FSU's Sarah Griffin to increase Maryland's lead to 14-12. When the score was tied at 23-23, Jade Brown came through with a kill after a set by Teryn Papp and a key dig by Doiron. From then on, the Terps scored on two kills by Beth Gillming, and a kill by Schmelzle. The Terrapins won the game at 30-25 on a kill by Wagener.
The Terps were challenged in the third while the Seminoles used strong serving and a hitting percentage of .258 to lead the entire game. FSU went ahead 3-10 when Maryland scored on an error by FSU. Both Wagener and Gillming were injured on a play in the third game. On Sarah Griffin's serve at 12-24, FSU scored five straight points before the Terps' offense tried to regain their rhythm. The Seminoles won the game on a Maryland service error, 14-30.
Maryland came out strong in the fourth game led by Gillming's serving to go up 4-1. The Terrapins built a 13-6 lead in the fourth game on a kill by Mary Beth Brown. Wagener and J. Brown had a block to increase Maryland's lead to 17-9. FSU tried to close in and came within four at 21-15. The Terps were unrelenting with six kills in the final stretch by Wagener, Smith and Schmelzle. Wagener provided the final kill for the Terps to soundly win the game and match 30-22.
Maryland will return to the Comcast Center on Friday, November 4th against the Virginia Cavaliers. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
