College Park, Md. - The University of Maryland women's soccer team makes a swing through the Sunshine State this week for two critical ACC matches. The Terps are in Tallahassee for a meeting with No. 14 Florida State tonight at 7 p.m. at the Seminole Soccer Complex. Maryland finishes up its road trip on Sunday, Oct. 9, at Miami in a 1 p.m. game at Cobb Stadium in Coral Gables.
A Look Back At Last Week
The Terps split a pair of ACC home games and take a 1-1-1 conference mark into this week's action.
Maryland picked up its first ACC win of the season on Friday, Sept. 30, when sophomore midfielder Nataly Arias blasted a 35-yarder into the Wake Forest net to give the Terps a 1-0 victory over the 11th-ranked Demon Deacons.
No. 1 North Carolina handed the Terrapins their first conference loss of the year, 4-0 on Sunday at Ludwig Field. In that game junior goalkeeper Nikki Resnick set the Ludwig Field record for saves in a game with 14.
Resnick Tops In ACC
Junior goalkeeper Nikki Resnick, a native of Boca Raton, Fla., is leading the ACC in saves per game (6.1). In Maryland's three ACC games this season she has stopped 33 shots for an amazing 11.0 saves per game average.
Resnick Shutting Out The ACC
Nikki Resnick is tied for fifth in career shutouts at Maryland with 10, but five of those shutouts have come against ACC opponents, including three ranked among the Top 11 in the nation at the time.
Francis Within Striking Distance
Senior captain Kimmy Francis is within reach of moving up several of Maryland's all-time lists.
She needs just one point to move into a tie for third on the career points chart with 63.
With her next goal Francis will move into a tie for sixth on the all-time goal scoring list with Robin McCullogh with 21 goals. Francis is already one of only eight players in the history of Maryland women's soccer to score 20 or more goals in their careers.
Long Range Threat
Sophomore midfielder Nataly Arias has made a habit of scoring big goals for the Terps in ACC action - or should it be long goals. Two of Arias' four career goals have come on 35-yard blasts to either tie or beat a Top 15 opponent.
Last year with the Terps trailing 1-0 vs. No. 14 Florida State at home, Arias fired a 35-yarder with her right foot that sailed past FSU's keeper into the net to give the Terps a 1-1 tie.
Last week, Arias did the exact samee thing vs. No. 11 Wake Forest, but this time the game was scoreless at the time and the Terrapins were able to hold on for a 1-0 victory.
Scouting the Seminoles
Florida State, ranked 17th in the country in the latest NSCAA/adidas coaches' poll, is 9-2-0 (2-2-0 ACC) on the season.
The Seminoles are led by sophomore forward Sel Kuraley who leads the team with 10 goals and five assists for 25 points. Junior midfielders India Trotter (7G-4A=18P) and Viola Odebrecht (5G-4A=14P) are second and third, respectively, on the squad in points.
Defensively, Florida State has allowed only nine goals in 11 games this season. Only five of those have come at the Seminole Soccer Complex, and four of the five came in a 4-1 loss to No. 1 North Carolina on Sept. 22.
Head Coach Mark Krikorian is in his first season at the helm of the FSU program. Overall, he has a head coaching record of 177-51-5 (.770) in 12 seasons.
Scouting the Hurricanes
Miami is 5-7-1 (0-4-0 ACC) on the season, and is currently struggling through a five-game losing streak. During that streak, the Hurricanse have been shutout in their last four contests - all ACC games.
Offensively, freshman midfielder Bryn Heinicke leads the team with nine points on three goals and three assists. Another freshman, Paulette Ricks-Chambers, is tied with Heinicke for the team lead in goals with three.
Defensively, Miami is led by sophomore goalkeeper Lauren McAdam who has 67 saves on the season and has allowed 17 goals. For the year, the Hurricanes are being out shot by their opponents 181-149.
Head Coach Tricia Taliafero is in her fourth season at the helm of the Miami program, compiling an overall record of 26-38-3 (.410). Overall she has a career record as a head coach of 64-61-6 (.511) in seven seasons.
Taliafero is a 1995 graduate of Maryland and was a four-year letterwinner (1992-95) for the women's soccer team. She still ranks among the all-time record holders at Maryland in points (18th, 35), goals (15th, 14) and game-winning goals (15th, 4).
All-Time vs. The ACC
The Terps have an all-time record of 31-66-9 (.335) in regular season ACC play.
The Florida State Series
The Terps and Seminoles have met 13 previous times, once each season from 1995-2000, twice each from 2001-03, and once last year. Overall, the series is tied, 6-6-1, with the Terps outscoring the Noles, 24-20 in the 13 games. Florida State has had the better of the series since 2001, winning five of the seven games between the two schools.
Last year, the two schools tied for the first time in 13 meetings. The 14th-ranked Seminoles took a 1-0 lead in the 54th minute on a Julia Schnugg goal. Time seemed to be running out for the Terps, but a miracle off the foot of Nataly Arias saved the game. Arias fired a 35-yard blast past FSU goalkeeper Joy McKenzie in the 75th minute earned a 1-1 tie for the Terrapins.
In 2003 the two teams met twice, including the last time the schools met in Tallahasee. FSU shutout the Terps 1-0 in the ACC semifinals. In the regular season match-up, Mallory Mahar scored in the fifth minute, the second of her career vs. the Seminoles, but Florida State would comeback to take a 2-1 victory in Tallahasee.
The Miami Series
The Maryland-Miami series is in its infancy with the teams meeting just once previously - a 2-1 Miami victory at Cobb Field in 2004.
In that 2004 meeting, neither team could find a way to score in the first half, but the Hurricanes' Lindsay Curtain broke the scoreless tie in the 60th minute when she fired a shot that deflected off Terrapin keeper Nikki Resnick for a 1-0 Miami lead. The Terps struck back three minutes later when Simone Dekker scored her first goal of the season to knot the game at 1-1. The game stayed knotted until the 85th minute when Cynthia Dongo scored the game-winner off a pass from Sheuneen Ta.
Playing The Best
Once again, the Terps boast one of the nation's most competitive schedules. The Terps take on eight teams in the preseason NSCAA poll including three of the top five and seven of the top 12. The Terps host No. 1 North Carolina (0-4 L), host No. 2 Penn State (0-3 L), at No. 5 Virginia (Oct. 23), host No. 8 Wake Forest (1-0 W), host No. 10 Boston College (Oct. 29), at No. 11 Notre Dame (0-6 L),at No. 12 Duke (Oct. 16), vs. No. 16 UConn at the Notre Dame Invitational (1-2 L, 2OT), at No. 17 Florida State (Oct. 6), and host No. 20 Yale (0-1 L).
During five of the past six seasons, Maryland has at least one upset win or tie of a top-10 ranked team: a 4-3 win at No. 9 Duke on Sept. 19, 1999 and a 2-1 victory over Clemson on Oct. 17, 1999; a 3-1 win over No. 4 Penn State on Aug. 29, 2000; a 1-0 overtime over No. 8 Clemson on Oct. 13, 2001 and a 1-1 tie at No. 2 North Carolina last season, on Nov. 1, 2002. Most recently, the Terps stunned No. 3 UCLA 2-1 at the Virginia Soccer Classic on Sept. 12, 2004. A month and a half later, Maryland beat No. 10 Duke 1-0 in overtime at Ludwig Field. The Terps topped all of those victories with a 1-0 shutout of No. 2 seed Penn State in the 2004 NCAA Tournament. The win also snapped the Nittany Lions 39-game home winning streak and was head coach Paula Wilkins' first-ever loss at Jeffrey Field.
