Clemson, SC. - The Maryland Terrapins rebounded with a win Saturday against the Clemson Tigers in Jervey Gym in Clemson, South Carolina. The Terps won the match 3-1 and are now 15-1, (6-1 ACC).
Clemson came into the match after a loss to Boston College Friday night (1-3). The Tigers are now 8-6, (3-3 ACC).
Maryland's Jade Brown led the team with 15 kills, with the Terrapins hitting .250 for the match. Three other Terps posted double figures in kills - Rachel Wagener (13), Stephanie Smith (12), and Beth Gilllming (10). On defense, Maggie Schmelzle had 18 digs and libero Stephanie Doiron had 15.
After a difficult loss to Georgia Tech the night before, Maryland was a bit rattled in the first game and fell behind by five points before Wagener's kill at 1-6 ignited the team. Steady serving by Tedi Doucet and Beth Gillming closed the gap and Maryland had its first tie at 10-10. Clemson regained a slight light with strong offense led by outside hitter Jeanette Abbott who had six kills in the first game. There were many battles at the top of the night with Clemson winning a pivotal point to go up 27-29, giving the Tigers the edge to surge for the win at 27-30.
Clemson had the lead in the beginning of the second game and was up by as many as seven points at 3-10. Maryland fought back, won four straight points and gained some momentum. The Terps took advantage of some hitting errors by the Tigers and took the lead at 19-18 when Mary Beth Brown and Smith had a key block. Doucet had a surprise kill which improved Maryland's lead to 24-20. Schmelzle kept alive an attack by Clemson and Wagener capitalized with a kill to win the next point. Taryn Papp had seven assists in the second game and set Wagener for the final point to win the game 30-25.
Gillming had the high in kills in the second game with six. Maggie Schmelzle had a team high six digs. Clemson was kept to a .158 hitting percentage in the second game.
Wagener and Schmelze's block in the beginning of the third game set the tone as Maryland lost the lead only once. Maryland had a .303 hitting percentage and returned serves relentlessly. Smith had the game-high six kills with a key point for Maryland to go up 7-5. Freshman setter Doucet had another kill to keep the Terps ahead at 12-11. Maryland went on a six-point run after that establishing a more comfortable lead with an ace by Schmelzle and a kill by Wagener. Smith was tenacious after an injury in the first game and had three kills in the final stretch. Maryland's blocking proved too much for Clemson and the Terps glided to win 30-21.
Both Wagener and Jade Brown had kills to open the fourth game and Maryland was up quickly at 4-1. Jade Brown hit a cross-court kill to extend the lead at 11-8. A service ace by Doiron and another kill by Jade Brown improved the lead further. Doiron was aggressive on defense and had a key dig which Schmelzle slammed for a kill to go up 17-12. Clemson's Meghan Stanton was a power server and brought the Tigers to within one point at 21-20, but Maryland focused and closed in to win the game on a kill by Mary Beth Brown for a final score of 30-25.
The Terrapins will return home to the Comcast Center against Wake Forest on Friday, October 14th at 7:00 p.m., just prior to Maryland Madness. The Terps then play Duke on Sunday, October 16th at 1:00 p.m. at the Comcast Center.
