Terps Finish Fourth at Palmetto Golf

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. - Junior Kate Stepanek fired an even-par 72 in the second round and went on to tie for sixth-place individually and lead Maryland to a fourth-place finish as a team Tuesday at the Edwin Watts/Palmetto Invitational women's golf tournament hosted by the College of Charleston.
Stepanek finished with a 54-hole total of 225 on the Oak Point Golf Course layout. She finished five shots behind medalist Renee Skidmore of Idaho, who shot a 71 in the final round to finish at 220 and earn a one-shot win over Adrienne White of Louisville.
It was Stepanek's third top-10 finish in Maryland's five fall tournaments and was the fifth time that she was Maryland's low scorer this fall. The event was split into 27 holes each on Monday and Tuesday, with the second and third rounds being scored on Tuesday.
As a team, Maryland had rounds of 304 and 305 to finish with a 919 total. The Terps moved up one spot in the team standings after ending Monday's first round in a tie for fifth. Idaho won the event at 912, with host College of Charleston one shot behind and Nebraska just two shots behind.
Also for Maryland, Katie Trotter closed with a 75 on Tuesday for a 232 total that tied her for 29th. Kelly Calkin had rounds of 75 and 74 Tuesday to tie for 32nd at 233, with Kelly MacWhinnie tying for 39th at 235. Jessica Reno tied for 60th at 241.
The event finished a positive fall season for Maryland. The Terps had two thirds and two fourths as a team in five events this fall. The team will be off until the spring season begins in February 2006.
