COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Four University of Maryland women's volleyball players were selected by the Atlantic Coast Conference for postseason awards today. Seniors Stephanie Smith and Rachel Wagener were named to the All-ACC First Team, while Jade Brown was named to the All-ACC Second Team, and Maggie Schmelzle to the All-ACC Freshmen Team for the Terps.
The ACC's selection committee is comprised of the conference's 12 coaches. Eighteen players were named to the First and Second-Team All-ACC and six to the Freshmen team.
Senior middle-blockers Wagener and Smith were two of ten players chosen for the All-ACC First Team. It was the first award for both. Wagener received the All-ACC Second Team Award in 2003 and 2004, and the 2002 ACC All-Freshmen Team. Wagener leads Maryland's all-time list for total blocks. Smith is second on Maryland's all-time career list for solo blocks and led the league with a .384 hitting percentage.
Jade Brown received All-ACC Second Team honors. Brown averaged 3.22 kills per game this season and had 984 total attacks for a .240 hitting percentage. Brown's career high is 24 kills and five blocks. Brown also was named to the 2004 All-ACC Freshmen Team.
Freshman Maggie Schmelzle was one of six freshmen in the league to earn All-ACC Freshman Team honors. Schmelzle posted 16 double-doubles on the year for the Terps, with a season high of 15 kills and 26 digs.
The Terrapins travel to Louisville for the first-round of the NCAA Tournament in a match against the University of Kentucky on Friday, December 2, at 5:00 p.m. Winners of the Friday night matches play in the second-round on Saturday in Louisville.
