With the ACC Field Hockey Championship underway, the semifinal matchups are set. Second-seeded and third-ranked Maryland faces third-seeded Duke on Friday, Nov. 4 at 7 p.m. on the Terps' home turf. Prior to that game, top-seeded and top-ranked Wake Forest battles fourth-seeded North Carolina at 4 p.m. All games will be played at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex in College Park.
The Terps enter the contest with a 17-2 mark, earning the second seed in the tournament after going 4-1 during the ACC regular season. Maryland is led by Defensive Player of the Year Paula Infante (Santiago, Chile). A vital member of the backfield, she has helped the second-ranked defense post six shutouts this year. She is also tied for second on the team with 11 goals and is third with 25 points.
On Wednesday night, Maryland had three players named to the All-ACC team. Infante and senior Lauren Powley (Mountaintop, Pa.) each earned their third all-conference nod, while senior Emily Beach (Bethesda, Md.) garnered the honor for the first time in her career.
Maryland battles Duke, who defeated Virginia, 5-1, in the first round to advance to the semifinals. The Terps defeated the Blue Devils in the regular season, 2-0, in Durham, N.C. With the win over the Cavaliers, Duke, who is ranked second in the nation, improved to 15-3 on the season. The game pits the top defensive and offensive players in the conference. Maryland's Infante battles Offensive Player of the Year Duke's Katie Grant.
Wake Forest remains the only undefeated team in the nation at 18-0. North Carolina, at 14-5, will try to hand the Demon Deacons their first loss of the season.
The winners of both semifinal games move on to the title match on Sunday, Nov. 6 at 12 p.m. The game will also be televised on the ACC's Regional Sports Network (Comcast SportsNet, Fox Sports South and Sun Sports).
The ticket office at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex opens an hour prior to the first game.
