Maryland Field Hockey Ranked No. 1 in the Coaches Poll

Nov. 8, 2005

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - After capturing its sixth ACC Field Hockey Tournament title with a win over Wake Forest, Maryland jumped up to No. 1 in the NFHCA Coaches Poll this week. Freshman Susie Rowe also earned National Rookie of the Week honors after being named tournament Most Valuable Player. The Terps will wait for the NCAA Tournament seedings and bracket to be announced tonight on CSTV or at www.NCAAsports.com.

The Terps, under the direction of 18th-year head coach Missy Meharg, defeated then-No. 1 Wake Forest in the title game of the ACC Tournament, 3-2. Maryland captured its first tournament title since 2001. The win also marked the 300th of Meharg's career.

Maryland, who is 19-2 on the season, was not ranked lower than third all season. Playing in the nation's top field hockey conference, the Terps ended the season with wins over four teams ranked in the national top five at the time of the meeting. Maryland closed out the ACC regular season with a 2-1 victory over then-No. 4 North Carolina, followed by a 2-1 win over then-No. 5 American. Then-No. 2 Duke fell victim to the Terps in the semifinals of the ACC Tournament, with Demon Deacons also losing to the Terps in the championship game.

Rowe (London, England) scored the game-winning goals in both games of the ACC Tournament. She helped the Terps rally back from a 3-2 second-half deficit, tallying the game-tying and the game-winning goals. Her goal with 41 seconds remaining in the contest vs. WFU was the deciding tally.

Maryland has made 10-consecutive trips to the NCAA Tournament and is looking for its 19th overall appearance in the postseason.
