
Wagener and Smith Garner Division I All-Region Team Awards

Colorado Springs, CO - Stephanie Smith and Rachel Wagener, who were both all-ACC first team selections, were named to the 2005 American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division I All-Region team yesterday. This is the second time Wagener has been selected for the All-Region team. Both Wagener and Smith were named to the 2005 All-ACC First Team and surpassed the 1,000 career kill mark on the same day in October against North Carolina.
Wagener is ranked No. 11 in the NCAA with 1.61 blocks per game. She is No. 21 in the nation and second in the ACC with a .380 hitting percentage. The senior middle blocker posted 405 kills (3.32 kpg) and 197 total blocks for the Terps this year. Wagener finishes her career with the Terrapins No. 1 on Maryland's All-Time list in total blocks (649); No. 1 in block assists (565); No. 3 in solo blocks (84); No. 5 in kills (1173); and No. 2 with the single season high in hitting percentage (.380). Her 21 kills against Virginia was her career-best. She notched double-digit kills in 24 of 31 matches this season.
Smith is first in the ACC and No. 28 in the nation with a .370 hitting percentage. The senior co-captain registered 328 kills (2.69) and 164 total blocks (1.34 bpg) for the Terps this year. Smith concludes her career with the Terps No. 2 on Maryland's All-Time list in solo blocks (87); No. 2 in block assists (515); No. 3 in total blocks (602); No. 7 in kills (1140); and No. 3 as the single season high in hitting percentage (.370). She posted a career high .765 hitting percentage against Duke on October 16 with her season high of 16 kills.
The two seniors led the Terps to a Co-Championship this year in the Atlantic Coast Conference with a 28-5 record (18-4 ACC) and back-to-back ACC titles in 2003 and 2004.
