COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland women's water polo team opens its second season at the Division I level this weekend at the Princeton Invitational in Princeton, N.J. The Terps will face Brown at 11:20 a.m. Saturday and Wagner at 4:30 p.m. They will close out the tournament Sunday against Marist at 10:50 a.m. and Collegiate Water Polo Association Southern Division rival Bucknell at 3:30 p.m.
Head Coach Carl Salyer makes his Maryland coaching debut while the Terps look to put last year's 0-12 inaugural season behind them. Fifth-year senior Elyse Corwin (Orinda, Calif.) in the team's leading returning scorer and was elected captain by her teammates.
"I think she's a great choice," Salyer said. "She's already proven to be a leader both in and out of the pool. The girls respect her and here experience as a Division I athlete both in water polo and swimming will prove to be invaluable to the team this year."
The Terps lost their top two scorers from last year's squad, Laura Nolan and Meghan Graves, but Salyer hopes players like Corwin, senior Colleen McShane (Chicago, Ill.) and junior Allison Kuzniar (St. Charles, Ill.) can step up and fill their void.
In addition, junior Marissa Corwin (Orinda, Calif.) will give the Terps solid minutes in the goal after tallying more than 100 saves last season.
Brown also opens its season Saturday against the Terps. The Bears were 18-8 last year, finishing first in the Northeast Division and ranked 19th in the country. Maryland's second opponent of the weekend, Wagner, will open the tournament against Harvard before taking on the Terps. The Seahawks are coming off a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference regular season championship in 2004. Marist went 9-20 last season en route to a third-place finish at the CWPA Northeastern Championship. Bucknell is the only team the Terps have faced in their brief one-year history. The Bison went 16-18 last season, including three wins over Maryland.
