LEWISBURG, Pa. -
The Maryland women's water polo team went 1-1 on the first day of the Bucknell Invitational. The Terps fell to Marist, 8-5, in their first game before defeating Slippery Rock, 8-4, later in the evening.
Senior Elyse Corwin (Orinda, Calif.) scored two of the Terps' five goals in the Marist game. Seniors Juli Jordan (Springfield, Va.) and Colleen McShane (Chicago, Ill.) and freshman Kacie Owens (Annapolis, Md.) added one goal apiece.
Junior goalie Marissa Corwin (Orinda, Calif.) registered 11 blocks while giving up seven goals. Sophomore Stacy Glantz (Roslyn, N.Y.) gave up Marist's other goal.
The loss to Marist comes just one week after defeating the Red Foxes for the first win in Maryland water polo history.
"The story of the game was that we were just outplayed," head coach Carl Salyer said. "Marist wanted to avenge their loss last week and came out ready to play."
The Terps bounced back in the second game of the day to defeat Slippery Rock, 9-6. Maryland came out shooting and had a 6-2 advantage at the end of the first quarter. The Terps took an 8-4 lead into halftime.
Owens and fellow freshman Allie Houseal (Harleysville, Pa.) came up big for the Terps, each recording a hat trick in the victory. McShane added two more goals, and Elyse Corwin had one. Her three goals on the day bring her team-leading total to 12.
Marissa Corwin recorded 12 blocks and four steals in the goal while allowing Slippery Rock to score four times. Glantz had one block while giving up two goals.
"The second game was a lot higher energy and we played a lot harder and a lot smarter," Salyer said.
The Terps (2-4) take on Penn State-Behrend at 8 a.m. and Michigan State at 2 p.m. tomorrow on the second and final day of competition at the Bucknell Invitational.
