COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland women's water polo team fell to Collegiate Water Polo Association Southern Division rival Bucknell, 10-3, in the team's first game of the Terrapin Invitational.

Senior Elyse Corwin (Orinda, Calif.) scored her team-leading 17th goal of the season in the second quarter to bring the Terps (3-6) within three goals at 5-2. Senior Colleen McShane (Chicago, Ill.) scored Maryland's first goal of the game and her sixth on the season with 3:10 left in the first quarter after No. 20 Bucknell opened a 3-0 lead. The Bison had a 5-1 lead at the end of the first quarter and were ahead by a score of 8-2 at halftime.

Senior Juli Jordan (Springfield, Va.) opened the third quarter with her sixth goal of the season, but the Terps were shut out for the final 12:43 of the game, as Bucknell won 10-3.

Junior goalie Marissa Corwin (Orinda, Calif.) had 10 blocks and four steals, while allowing all 10 Bison goals. Freshman Allie Houseal (Harleysville, Pa.) registered the Terps' only assist on the night to go along with two steals. McShane also tallied two steals, while Elyse Corwin, junior Allison Kuzniar (St. Charles, Ill.) and freshman Kacie Owens (Annapolis, Md.) each had one.

"The girls have come a long way. They've gotten a lot of game experience and played hard," head coach Carl Salyer said. "They made fewer mistakes tonight than they have all year. But they still made some key mistakes, which led to easy goals.

"We're getting better every weekend, and that's the fun part. We need to convert more of our opportunities, but we played a lot better defensively. We just need to clean up the silly mistakes in front of the cage."

The Terrapin Invitational continues tomorrow at the Campus Recreation Center Natatorium. Action starts at 1 p.m. when the New York Aquatic Club takes on Salem International. The Terps will face Southern Division foe George Washington at 3 p.m. and Navy Aquatic Club at 8 p.m.
