Maryland Water Polo Drops Two At Terrapin Invitational

Feb. 26, 2005

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland women's water polo team dropped two games on the second day of the Terrapin Invitational. The Terps fell to Collegiate Water Polo Association Southern Division rival George Washington, 6-3, before losing to the Naval Academy Aquatic Club, 9-4.

After getting shut out in the first quarter as the Colonials took a 3-0 lead, senior Colleen McShane (Chicago, Ill.) put the Terps on the board 35 seconds into the second period with her seventh goal of the season. It would be the only goal of the quarter, as George Washington took a 3-1 lead into halftime.

The Colonials blanked the Terps for most of the third quarter before junior Rebecca Kadushin (College Park, Md.) scored her second goal of the year with 31 seconds left to make it 5-2. Junior Allison Kuzniar (St. Charles, Ill.) added a goal one minute, 40 seconds into the fourth quarter to bring the Terps within two at 5-3, but George Washington quickly countered 16 seconds later. Both teams would go scoreless over the last five minutes of the game. The Colonials won 6-3.

McShane had three steals, while six Terps had one steal apiece. McShane and freshman Allie Houseal (Harleysville, Pa.) each had an assist. Junior goalie Marissa Corwin (Orinda, Calif.) tallied four saves and three steals while allowing four Colonial goals. Sophomore goalie Stacy Glantz (Roslyn, N.Y.) allowed the other two goals and had one block.

In the Terps' second and final game of the night, the Naval Academy Aquatic Club opened an early 1-0 lead, but the Terps came right back when freshman Kacie Owens (Annapolis, Md.), a former member of the Navy club, put the ball in the net for the fifth time this year. Navy scored five straight goals to take a 6-1 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Navy's scoring run continued in the second quarter, as they notched another goal one minute, 20 seconds into the period. Both teams were shut down for the rest of the quarter until Terp senior Elyse Corwin (Orinda, Calif.), whose nine-game scoring streak was snapped in the day's first game, scored her team-leading 18th goal of the season with 10 seconds left. Navy had a 7-2 lead at halftime.

Each team scored only one goal in the third quarter, with Kuzniar adding the Terps' third goal of the game and her fifth of the season. Corwin added Maryland's fourth and final goal of the night - her 19th of the season - just under a minute into the fourth period. Navy won the game 9-4.

Marissa Corwin registered nine saves and five steals while allowing all nine Navy goals. She also had an assist. Kuzniar had two steals, while Owens, senior Juli Jordan (Springfield, Va.) and junior Meghan Mulhern (Gaithersburg, Md.) each had one.

The Terps (3-8, 0-1 Southern Division) return to the pool next weekend when the travel to Salem, W.Va. for a league weekend. Maryland will face Princeton at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, March 5 and host Salem International at 8 p.m.
