ERIE, Pa. -
The Maryland women's water polo team defeated Siena, 12-5, to finish the Penn State-Behrend Invitational with a 2-2 record on the weekend. The Terps defeated Utica but fell to Notre Dame and Ottawa on the first day of the tournament.
Tied for 10th in the Collegiate Water Polo Association poll this week, Maryland (6-12) was led by senior Elyse Corwin (Orinda, Calif.), who accounted for half the Terps' offense, scoring six goals in the game. One of the top scorers in the country, Corwin brought her team-leading total to 30 goals. Senior Colleen McShane (Chicago, Ill.) also notched a hat trick, while senior Juli Jordan (Springfield, Va.), junior Allison Kuzniar (St. Charles, Ill.) and sophomore Orsi Ferenczy (Fot, Hungary) scored one goal apiece.
The Terps got off to a bit of a slow start offensively, as the game was tied 3-3 midway through the second quarter, but they went on a 3-0 run to close out the half, taking a 6-3 lead into halftime, and never looked back. Maryland shut out Siena in the third quarter while scoring six more goals to extend the lead to 12-3. The Terps were blanked in the fourth frame while allowing two Saints' goals, which brought the final score to 12-5.
Junior goalie Marissa Corwin (Orinda, Calif.) had 13 blocks and three steals while allowing three goals in three quarters in the cage. Sophomore Stacy Glantz (Roslyn, N.Y.) took over in the fourth period, allowing two goals and registering two saves.
Ferenczy and Jordan each contributed two steals, while McShane, Elyse Corwin, senior Sarah Wahba (Crofton, Md.) and sophomores Kerry McFadden (Longwood, Fla.) and Scandia DiSaverio (Wilmington, Del.) had one steal apiece.
The Terps have a 10-day break from competition before returning to the pool March 30 to face Southern Division rival George Washington at 7 p.m. at the Campus Recreation Center Natatorium in College Park. Maryland nearly defeated the Colonials in the teams' previous meeting, losing in an overtime heartbreaker, 8-6.
