
Terrapins Capture Spider Women's Golf Tourney

BRADENTON, Fla. - Kate Stepanek and Kelly Calkin each tied for second individually to spark the University of Maryland to the team title at the Spider Spring Invitational women's golf tournament hosted in Florida by the University of Richmond.
Calkin shot a final-round 72 Tuesday to finish with a 153 total over the 36-hole event. Stepanek also finished with a 153 total after opening with a 72 in Monday's first round.
The Terrapins shot 308 on the final day, preserving the five-shot lead they took into Tuesday's second round. As a team, Maryland shot 627, winning the team event by 10 shots over the University of Montana.
Katie Trotter placed seventh individually to give the Terps three players in the top 10. She finished with a 78 on Tuesday to close with a 159 total. Jessica Reno and Katie Elliott tied for 13th individually, with Elliott making the trip to play as an individual. Kelly MacWhinnie also broke 80 on Tuesday, closing with a second-round 79 to place 16th at 164.
Krista Swanson of Montana shot a 152 to take medalist honors, firing a 75 on Tuesday to beat Stepanek and Calkin by one shot. Calkin's 72 was the best round of the day for the entire field.
Maryland plays next on April 4 and 5 at the Seahawk Invitational hosted by UNC Wilmington.
