Maryland Polo Hosts George Washington In Battle Of The Beltway Rematch

March 29, 2005

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland women's water polo team hosts Southern Division rival George Washington Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Campus Recreation Center Natatorium.

In their last match-up just three weeks ago, the Colonials defeated the Terps in a double-overtime thriller, 8-6. Maryland had a 5-3 lead at halftime but was blanked through most of the second half, until senior Colleen McShane (Chicago, Ill.) got a steal and scored the tying goal with just 1:10 remaining in regulation. But a few small mistakes cost the Terps two Colonial goals in the first extra period, and they were unable to recover.

The Terps (6-12, 1-3 Southern Division) are coming off the Penn State-Behrend Invitational 10 days ago, in which they went 2-2 on the weekend. Maryland defeated Utica, 13-3, and Siena, 12-5, but fell to Notre Dame, 10-5, and Ottawa, 9-8.

The Colonials (9-8, 2-2 CWPA) are coming of a 3-1 weekend at the Claremont Invitational March 20-21.

Senior Elyse Corwin (Orinda, Calif.) leads the team in scoring and is among the best in the nation with 33 goals. She has scored in 13 of the Terps' 18 games, including the first nine of the season. McShane is second with 19, followed by senior Juli Jordan (Springfield, Va.) with 16 and freshman Kacie Owens (Annapolis, Md.) with 12.

Junior goalie Marissa Corwin (Orinda, Calif.) is among the nation's leaders in saves with 141.

The Terps are ranked ninth in the Collegiate Water Polo Association poll this week. Maryland jumped up one spot after being tied for 10th with Washington and Jefferson College last week, which marked the Terps' first ranking in program history. Indiana sits atop the poll. Princeton, Bucknell and George Washington, Maryland's Southern Division foes, are ranked fourth, sixth and eighth, respectively.
