COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
The Maryland women's water polo team dropped another heartbreaker to Southern Division rival George Washington, 10-9, Wednesday night. In their last meeting, the Colonials defeated the Terps in double overtime.
After more than three scoreless minutes to start the game, George Washington scored twice in less than a minute to take a 2-0 lead. The Terps (6-13, 1-4 Southern Division) fought back, with senior Elyse Corwin (Orinda, Calif.) scoring 21 seconds later, and sophomore Orsi Ferenczy (Fot, Hungary) tying it up with 1:26 left in the first quarter, but the Colonials regained the lead at 3-2 with 19 seconds left in the period.
George Washington (10-8, 3-2 CWPA) scored the first goal of the second quarter before senior Juli Jordan (Springfield, Va.) and freshman Kacie Owens (Annapolis, Md.) each scored to tie it up. With less than a minute to go before the end of the second period, senior Colleen McShane (Chicago, Ill.) gave the Terps' their first lead of the game, and Maryland took a 5-4 advantage into halftime.
The two teams traded three goals in the third quarter, and the score was tied 7-7 heading into the final frame. George Washington came out shooting in the fourth period and scored just 13 seconds in for its first lead since the middle of the second quarter. The Colonials took a two-goal advantage less than a minute later, and the Terps would never recover. Down by one with one second left on the clock, Maryland called a quick time out before watching the would-be game-tying goal sail over the net. George Washington had won another tight one, 10-9.
Jordan notched a hat trick for the Terps, while McShane had two goals. Corwin scored once, bringing her team-leading total to 34 goals on the season. Ferenczy, Owens and freshman Allie Houseal (Harleysville, Pa.) also scored.
Junior goalie Marissa Corwin (Orinda, Calif.) had six blocks and four steals while allowing all 10 Colonial goals. Jordan and Houseal led the team with three steals apiece, while Elyse Corwin and McShane each had one. Jordan, Ferenczy, Elyse Corwin and juniors Becca Kadushin (College Park, Md.) and Allison Kuzniar (St. Charles, Ill.) each had an assist.
The Terps travel to Loudonville, N.Y., for the Siena Invite this weekend. Maryland will face Queens and Penn State-Behrend on Saturday before taking on Iona on Sunday.
