
Terps Polo Heads North For Siena Invitational

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland women's water polo team travels to Loudonville, N.Y. for the Siena Invitational this weekend. The Terps are the top seed in the `B' bracket and the second seed overall for the tournament. They will take on Queens at 1:50 p.m. and Penn State-Behrend at 6:50 p.m. Saturday before facing Iona at 10:20 a.m. Sunday.
The championship round starts at 1 p.m. Sunday with the fourth-place teams from each bracket facing off. The title game, pitting the top finishers from each bracket against each other, is at 4:45 p.m. Teams competing in the `A' bracket include Marist, Mercyhurst, St. Francis-N.Y. and host Siena.
The Terps (6-13, 1-4 Southern Division) are coming off another heartbreaker to division rival George Washington. Maryland led at halftime, but fell to the Colonials, 10-9.
Senior Elyse Corwin (Orinda, Calif.) leads the team in scoring and is among the best in the nation with 34 goals. She has scored in 14 of the Terps' 19 games, including the first nine of the season. Senior Colleen McShane (Chicago, Ill.) is second with 21, followed by senior Juli Jordan (Springfield, Va.) with 19 and freshman Kacie Owens (Annapolis, Md.) with 13.
Junior goalie Marissa Corwin (Orinda, Calif.) is among the nation's leaders in saves with 147.
The Terps' first opponent of the weekend, Queens College, is 2-11 on the season and coming off an 18-4 loss to Wagner on March 23. Penn State-Behrend is 4-10 overall and coming off a 13-3 win over Grove City on Tuesday. The Terps faced the Lions on Feb. 6 at the Bucknell Invite. Maryland won the meeting 12-6. Iona is 3-2 overall and coming off a 2-2 weekend at the Penn State-Behrend Invitational March 19-20.
The Terps are ranked ninth in the Collegiate Water Polo Association poll for the second straight week. Maryland made its debut in the poll on March 16, tying for 10th with Washington and Jefferson College. Indiana sits atop the poll. Princeton, Bucknell and George Washington, the Terps' Southern Division foes, are ranked fourth, sixth and eighth, respectively.
