
Field Hockey Announces Team Awards at Annual Team Banquet

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland field hockey team held its annual, end-of-the-year banquet Saturday evening at the University's golf course. All-Americans Paula Infante and Lauren Powley both earned the Katie Kauffman Award, presented to the team's Most Outstanding Player, while co-captain Sara Silvetti received the Kateri Simon Unsung Hero award. Co-captain Kristin Harris was awarded the first-annual Carla Tagliente Award, presented to the player who has displayed excellence on the field and in the classroom.
A sophomore, Infante (Santiago, Chile) earned first team All-American honors by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association for the second-consecutive year. Breaking the single-game NCAA Tournament record with five goals in the first-round victory over Delaware, she led the team in goals and was second in points end route to All-ACC and NFHCA Mid-Atlantic All-Region nods. She also earned a spot on the NCAA and ACC All-Tournament teams.
Junior Powley (Mountaintop, Pa.) has been a staple in the midfield since arriving on campus. She collected her third-straight All-America citation, garnering first team nods for the second-straight year. She has led the team in assists for the second year in a row and was named to the All-ACC squad for the second time, while also earning Mid-Atlantic All-Region honors. She is also a member of the U.S. National Under-21 team.
Silvetti (Wapwallopen, Pa.) played started every game in the backfield over the last four seasons, while serving as the team's co-captain the last two years. This season, she earned All-ACC and second-team All-American nods for the first time in her career. She played in the North-South All-Star game in November and recently earned a spot on the U.S. Senior National Team. She was also named to the NFHCA Mid-Atlantic All-Region squad in her final two seasons as a Terp.
The first honoree of the Carla Tagliente award, Harris (Lititz, Pa.) was also a four-year starter, missing the first game of her career this season. She was a four-time honoree on the NFHCA National Academic Squad and was named to the ACC Honor Roll three times. This year, she earned her first All-America nod when she was named to the third team. She was also selected to the ACC All-Tournament squad. The award is named in honor of four-time All-American Carla Tagliente who lettered at Maryland from 1997-2000. A Honda Award finalist, she was also an outstanding student, earning a spot on the CoSIDA Academic All-America squad three times. Tagliente started every game of her career, finishing with a school-record 73 goals and 187 points. She also ranked sixth all-time with 41 assists. Named the 1997 ACC Rookie of the Year, Taglient graduated from Maryland summa cum laude with a degree in marketing and finance in December 2001. She also delivered the commencement address for the Robert H. Smith School of Business.
The Terps reached the NCAA Final Four for the second-straight year, going 17-6 on the season. Maryland earned a No. 2 national ranking in the final coaches poll of the season.
