COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
The University of Maryland athletics department will celebrate National Student-Athlete Day on Friday, April 15, which recognizes the "student" in student-athlete. Close to 150 Redland Middle School students will be hosted by 80 Terrapin student-athletes from 14 different teams in a full day of events.
National Student-Athlete Day (NSAD) recognizes the accomplishments of student-athletes nationwide who excel in the classroom, on the playing fields and in their communities. NSAD was created by the National Consortium for Academics and Sports (NCAS) and the Northeastern University Center for the Study of Sport in Society, with partnership from the NCAA and the National Federation of State High School Associations.
Co-sponsored on campus by the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and the Academic Support & Career Development Unit (ASCDU), a campus tour, guest speakers, team competitions and lunch with the Terrapins are among the activities planned for the Redland Middle School students.
Last year, over 250 Terrapin student-athletes were named to the University of Maryland's Intercollegiate Athletics Honor Roll in both the fall and spring semesters. A student-athlete must earn a 3.0 grade point average in a semester or better to be eligible for the list.
