Arnold to Assist With Terrapin Field Hockey During Spring Training

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland field hockey coach Missy Meharg has announced the addition of Clemens Arnold as a spring training assistant coach. He will assist the staff during the 2005 spring workouts.

"We are fortunate to have a hockey player of this caliber on our campus," said Meharg of Arnold. "His international playing experience coupled with his commitment to a masters in Aeronautical Engineering, make him an amazing role model for our women. Clemens excels in the subtle traits of today's hockey game at the highest level. It is an honor to have him with work with us during the spring season."

Arnold will assist Meharg and current assistant coach Marybeth Freeman in practice and off-season workouts, while providing technical and tactical expertise.

"So far, this has been a great experience working with Missy and the staff and seeing the players develop their skills so quickly," said Arnold, who has been working with the team since the spring season began. "I think this team has great potential and I hope I can help them improve their game to be prepared for the fall."

Arnold was the goalkeeper on the German national team from 1997-2004, winning the silver medal at the 2004 Olympics. He also helped his team to a fifth-place showing at the 2000 Sydney Games and participated in the 2002 World Championships in Malaysia. In 2002, he was named Keeper of the Tournament at the Champions Trophy in Rotterdam, Holland, a tournament which his squad won.

Arnold is currently taking graduate courses at the University of Maryland in Aeronautical Engineering. He has a degree in airplane construction and design from the University of Applies Sciences in Hanburg, Germany.

The Terps return eight starters, including two first team All-Americans, from last year's team which reached the NCAA Tournament semifinals for the second-consecutive year.
