LEWISBURG, Pa. -
The fourth-seeded Maryland women's water polo team went 1-2 on the first day of the Southern Division Championships at Bucknell's Kinney Natatorium on Saturday. The Terps fell to top-seeded Princeton, 12-4, before blanking fifth-seeded Salem International, 11-0, then losing to the second-seeded Bison, 10-2.
Maryland scored one goal in each quarter against the Tigers. Senior Juli Jordan (Springfield, Va.) had two goals, three assists and two steals in the game, while freshman Allie Houseal (Harleysville, Pa.) had one goal, one assist and one steal. Senior Elyse Corwin (Orinda, Calif.) scored the Terps' fourth goal, and junior Allison Kuzniar (St. Charles, Ill.) and freshmen Atalie Abranovic (Kittanning, Pa.) and Emily Smoak (Salisbury, Md.) each added a steal.
Junior goalie Marissa Corwin (Orinda, Calif.) registered seven blocks while allowing all 12 Princeton goals.
Corwin recorded her first shutout as a Terrapin in Maryland's second game of the day, and the Terps poured it on Salem International. Jordan and senior Colleen McShane (Chicago, Ill.) each had two goals, while Houseal, Kuzniar, Smoak, Elyse Corwin, juniors Jenna Nader (Canonsburg, Pa.) and Meghan Mulhern (Gaithersburg, Md.) and sophomore Kerry McFadden (Longwood, Fla.) had one score apiece.
Jordan recorded three steals and an assist, while McShane registered one steal and two assists. Smoak, Nader, sophomore Audrey Lopez (Elkton, Md.) and freshman Kacie Owens (Annapolis, Md.) tallied two steals apiece, while junior Rebecca Kadushin (College Park, Md.) had one. Houseal, Owens, Kuzniar and sophomore Orsi Ferenczy (Fot, Hungary) each had an assist, and Marissa Corwin recorded seven blocks in goal.
Bucknell blanked the Terps through the first half in the semi-finals, as Maryland was only able to muster up two goals against the host Bison. Jordan had a goal and a steal, and Owens scored the Terrapins' other goal of the game. Elyse Corwin had a steal and an assist, and Nader recorded one steal. Marissa Corwin had four blocks while allowing all 10 Bucknell goals.
The Terps (11-18, 3-7 CWPA) will face George Washington Sunday at 10 a.m. in a battle for third place. Maryland is 0-3 against the Colonials this season.
