LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. -
The Maryland women's water polo team went 1-1 on the second day of the Siena Invitational, finishing third in the tournament. After winning their two games yesterday against Queens College and Penn State-Behrend, the Terps fell to Iona, 4-3, then defeated Mercyhurst, 10-6, in the consolation game.
In a game dictated by defense, Maryland and Iona were tied 1-1 at the end of the first quarter, but the Gaels took a 2-1 lead into halftime. The score was 4-2 Iona at the end of the third period. Despite shutting Iona out in the final frame, the Terps lost, 4-3.
Senior Colleen McShane (Chicago, Ill.) scored twice, and senior Juli Jordan (Springfield, Va.) added a goal of her own.
Jordan also played the first half of the game in the goal, tallying four blocks while allowing two Iona scores. Senior Sarah Wahba (Crofton, Md.) played the third quarter in the cage, giving up the Gaels' other two goals, before regular goalie Marissa Corwin (Orinda, Calif.) took over in the fourth period and registered one save.
The Terps moved on to the consolation game against Mercyhurst, which was coming off a 9-6 loss to Marist earlier in the day. Maryland took a 4-2 lead in the first quarter and had a 5-4 advantage at halftime. The Terps led 7-5 after the third period and won the game, 10-6.
McShane scored four goals, seven steals and two assists, while senior Elyse Corwin (Orinda, Calif.) notched a hat trick. Freshman Allie Houseal (Harleysville, Pa.) tallied twice and freshman Kacie Owens (Annapolis, Md.) scored one goal for the Terps.
Marissa Corwin played the whole game in the cage, registering five blocks and three steals while allowing all six Mercyhurst goals.
McShane led the Terps in scoring this weekend with 10 goals, including six on Sunday.
The Terps (9-14) went 3-1 at the tournament, their best four-game stretch in the program's brief two-year history. Maryland is ranked ninth in the Collegiate Water Polo Association poll this week.
Iona went undefeated on the weekend to win the invitational, defeating Marist, 8-4, in the championship game. St. Francis-N.Y. finished fifth after beating Penn State-Behrend, 11-8, and host Siena finished seventh, defeating Queens College, 17-9.
The Terps host CWPA league play next weekend. Maryland will take on Southern Division foe Salem International Friday evening at the Campus Recreation Center Natatorium before facing division rivals Princeton and Bucknell Saturday night.
