COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Former All-American field hockey Terrapin Sabrina Salam-Curow died on April 4 after a fatal car accident in the Boston area where she was living and working with her family.
"Sabrina - `Sabby,' as we called her - was one of the most amazing student-athletes to ever compete at Maryland. Sabrina outworked her opponents both physically and mentally, a characteristic that was contagious en route to a national championship in her senior year," said Terrapin head coach Missy Meharg who coached Salam-Curow from 1992-93. "It was an honor to be a part of her life."
"Sabrina was a great leader and someone that I looked up to and wanted to emulate," remarked U.S. National Team member and former Terrapin All-American Katie Kauffman-Beach, who was a teammate of Salam-Curow for two years. "She was very poised on the field and had a calm style of play. I am glad I had the opportunity to know and play with her."
A native of Germany, Salam-Curow applied the same work ethic into the classroom, graduating summa cum laude with a bachelor of science degree in psychology in three years, earning all "As" and one "B" in her undergraduate courses. She was named 1992 Maryland Scholar-Athlete of the Year and was a NACDA Post Graduate Scholarship finalist that same year. She went on to earn a Ph.D. in Organizational Behavior at the R.H. School of Business at Maryland.
Salam-Curow was a two-time first team All-American and All-ACC selection. She was also named to the conference all-tournament team three times and the NCAA All-Tournament team in 1993, the year the Terps captured their second NCAA title. She also helped her team capture the 1992 ACC crown. Salam-Curow ranks fourth all-time at Maryland and eighth in the ACC with 49 career assists.
Salam-Curow was working as a consultant at Monitor Software since 2001 in their Frankfurt branch, before being transferred to the company's Cambridge, Mass., office in 2002.
Salam-Curow is survived by her husband, Kevin, and their 10-month old son, Sean Alexander. Her sister, Sara, was also a three-year letterwinner at Maryland from 1994-96.
