Maryland Water Polo Falls To Princeton, 17-6

April 9, 2005

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland women's water polo team fell to Southern Division rival Princeton, 17-6, Saturday evening, in the team's second of three league games this weekend.

The Tigers scored the first six goals of the game, including five in the first quarter, before sophomore Orsi Ferenczy (Fot, Hungary) scored the first of her two goals with 1 minute, 22 seconds elapsed in the second. Senior Colleen McShane (Chicago, Ill.) scored twice, but Princeton took a 9-3 lead into halftime.

The Terps (10-15, 2-5 CWPA) came out shooting in the third, with McShane netting a goal just 19 seconds into the quarter and again 1:39 later for her fourth and final goal, to bring the score to 9-5, but the Tigers fought back and had a 12-5 advantage at the end of the third period. After Princeton scored twice in the final frame, Ferenczy added a Maryland goal, but it wasn't enough as the Tigers would go on to score three more times and win 17-6.

McShane scored four goals and Ferenczy added two to account for all the Terps' scoring in the game. McShane and senior Elyse Corwin (Orinda, Calif.) had two steals apiece, while Ferenczy and sophomore Audrey Lopez (Elkton, Md.) each had one.

With junior goalie Marissa Corwin (Orinda, Calif.) out for the second straight game with an injury, the Terps again split time in the cage. Senior Sarah Wahba (Crofton, Md.) started her second straight game in goal, registering one block and allowing five Princeton goals. Junior Jenna Nader (Canonsburg, Pa.) took over in the second quarter, allowing four more Tiger tallies. In the third quarter, Ferenczy had one save and allowed three Princeton scores, and in the final frame, sophomore Scandia DiSaverio (Wilmington, Del.) allowed five Tiger goals.

"The score wasn't pretty, but I was pleased with the team's effort," head coach Carl Salyer said. "We did a good job making plays both offensively and defensively. Princeton is a very good team."

The Terps take on Bucknell tonight at 8:30 p.m. in the final home game of the season. Seniors McShane, Wahba, Elyse Corwin and Juli Jordan (Springfield, Va.) will be honored before the game.
