COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland women's water polo team lost to Southern Division rival Bucknell, 16-3, on Senior Night. The game wraps up the Terps' regular season, in which they recorded a 10-16 overall record, including 2-6 in league action.
Bucknell had a 4-1 advantage after the first quarter, then pulled away in the second, scoring five straight goals to take a 9-1 lead into halftime. The Terps added one goal in the third period and one more in the final frame, but the Bison offense was too much to handle, as Bucknell won 16-3.
Senior Juli Jordan (Springfield, Va.) accounted for two-thirds of Maryland's offense, scoring twice to go along with four steals. Junior Jenna Nader (Canonsburg, Pa.) netted the Terps' other goal of the game.
With junior goalie Marissa Corwin (Orinda, Calif.) sidelined by injury for the third consecutive game, the Terps again split time in the cage. Senior Sarah Wahba (Crofton, Md.) played the first half in the goal, registering three steals while allowing nine Bucknell tallies. Freshman Allie Houseal (Harleysville, Pa.) took over in the third quarter, giving up two goals, and senior Elyse Corwin (Orinda, Calif.) played the fourth period, tallying one steal while allowing the final five Bison goals.
The Terps honored their four seniors before the game in recognition of their final home competition. Jordan, Wahba, Elyse Corwin and Colleen McShane (Chicago, Ill.) were escorted onto the pool deck by their families and introduced to the crowd.
"As a first-year coach, I couldn't have asked for a better senior class," head coach Carl Salyer said. "They were great."
The Terps return to the pool April 23-24 for the Southern Division Championships in Lewisburg, Pa.
