NASHVILLE, Tenn. - John Eades shot a 1-under-par round of 70 on Saturday, his second subpar round of the tournament, to finish tied for 33rd and lead the University of Maryland to a 21st-place finish as a team at the NCAA East Regional men's golf tournament played at The Golf Club of Tennessee.
Maryland closed the tournament with a final-round 293 as a team, taking advantage of Eades' round of 70. The Terrapins finished at 888 over the 54-hole event, three shots out of the top 20. Eades, a junior, finished seven shots out of an individual berth to the NCAA Nationals, as the top 10 teams and two individuals on non-qualifying teams earned a trip to the Nationals, to be held in early June in Baltimore.
The Terrapins started on the 10th hole in Saturday's round and Eades got hot early. He was 2-under-par after his first seven holes, but fell back to 1-over later in the round. He had three birdies in a four-hole stretch late in the round before bogeying his final hole to finish at 70 and the tournament at even-par 213.
Also for Maryland, Tully Coyle closed with a 73 to post a 223 total and tie for 92nd. Hunter Bendall had a 79 on Saturday and tied for 100th place at 225. Tyler Witman had a 74 and a 230 total, with Matt Schall improving to a 76 on Saturday and a 241 total.
Maryland's 21st-place finish matched its team standing from both the 2002 and 2003 regional tournaments. The Terps were 20th a year ago at the East Regional hosted by Yale.
Wake Forest held off a strong charge by Tennessee to claim the team title with an 835 total. The Volunteers were two shots back despite shooting a 279 on the final day. Georgia Southern claimed the 10th and final team qualifying spot by firing a 281 on Saturday and finishing at 850, two shots ahead of Clemson.
Coastal Carolina's Dustin Johnson was the individual medalist in the tournament, having rounds of 65-69-64 for a 15-under-par total of 198. East Tennessee State's Rhys Davies was second, one shot back and claimed one of the individual-qualifying spots. North Carolina's Martin Ureta was the other individual qualifier, tying for eighth overall at 206.
