WINNING WITH CHARACTER, a regional information workshop, will be hosted by the University of Maryland on Wednesday, July 20, 2005. The conference will be held at the University of Maryland Gossett Football Complex. High school administrators and coaches from the greater District of Columbia area, as well as surrounding areas, are expected to be in attendance.
Following registration at 8:30 a.m., the morning session will feature a presentation by Dr. Sharon Kay Stoll, Ph.D., on the subject of Character Education in Sport. Dr. Stoll is the founder and director of the Center for ETHICS* in Sport and a professor at the University of Idaho. She is considered one of the leading authorities in competitive moral education intervention for students. Her address will focus on character education in sport. Dr. Stoll holds a Ph.D. in Sport Philosophy from Kent State University and has authored eight books. As a teacher, lecturer, and consultant, she is well-known for her knowledge in teaching methodology and thought leadership in moral education and character development.
The afternoon session will again feature Dr. Stoll as well as Kevin Glover, Director of Character Education with University of Maryland Athletics, and Bobby Lankford, Character Education Coordinator with University of Georgia football.
The purpose of the workshop will be to discuss life issues and choices and how to use sports as an avenue to develop character. What is character? How is character developed? What is the role of character in sport? The workshop will focus on the successful models for character development and education for student athletes currently in place at the University of Georgia, the University of Maryland, and numerous high schools across the nation.
