COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The defending ACC Champion Maryland volleyball team will open its 2005 schedule by hosting the Courtyard by Marriott Ft. Meade Invitational on Labor Day weekend. The tournament, being held Sept. 2 and 3 at Comcast Center Pavilion, features Texas-Arlington, Marshall and Rutgers in addition to the Terrapins.
The Terps return eight letterwinners and four starters from last year's team, which won its second-consecutive ACC Championship and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Led by senior middle blockers Rachel Wagener and Stephanie Smith, Maryland will also play tournaments at Pittsburgh and Fordham before beginning the Atlantic Coast Conference schedule.
Texas-Arlington went 24-7 a season ago and returns eight letterwinners and five starters from that squad. Rutgers finished 2004 with a 16-10 overall record and returns seven letterwinners, while Marshall finished last year at 22-10.
All Courtyard by Marriott Ft. Meade Invitational matches will be at Comcast Center Pavilion, which enters its third full season as the home court of the Terrapins. Admission is free.
