COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland field hockey team is ranked No. 2 in the first National Field Hockey Coaches Association Top 20 poll of the season. The Terps, who are undefeated heading into ACC action this weekend, have beaten three teams rated in the top 20.
Maryland begins the year ranked where it left off last year at the No. 2 spot. Five of the six ACC teams are also ranked, including claiming the top four spots in the poll with three-time defending NCAA champion Wake Forest holding onto the top position. North Carolina and Duke follow the Terps in the third and fourth positions. Boston College, who Maryland faces this weekend, is No. 16.
The Terps have already defeated No. 8 Michigan, No. 9 Old Dominion and No. 17 Ohio State, and will face No. 5 American and No. 19 Delaware later this season, as well as play a rematch versus ODU.
ACC foe Virginia is receiving votes, as are Maryland's non-conference opponents Northwestern, Harvard, California, Pennsylvania, Stanford and Princeton.
The Terps travel to face the Eagles on Saturday, Sept. 17 at 11 a.m. for the team's ACC opener. Maryland then plays at Harvard on Sunday, Sept. 18 at 1 p.m. before returning home.
