
Terp Field Hockey Opens ACC Slate at Boston College

The No. 2-rankd Terrapin field hockey team hits the road for its first ACC game of the season when it faces conference newcomer Boston College on Saturday, Sept. 17. It will be the first-ever ACC match for the No. 16 Eagles. Closing out the weekend, Harvard hosts Maryland on Sunday, Sept. 18.

Game 4: Sat., Sept. 17 at Boston College (4-1, 0-0) 11 a.m.
Game 5: Sun., Sept. 18 at Harvard (3-0) 1 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT: Maryland retained its perfect record in the Terrapin Invitational last weekend, picking up a pair of wins over the NorPac's California (4-2) and Stanford (6-0).
Junior All-American Paula Infante scored back-to-back goals to lead the Terps back from a 2-1 second-half deficit against the Bears, en route to a 4-2 victory in the first game of the Terrapin Invitational.
Maryland then exploded for four first-half goals and posted its second shutout of the season, 6-0, over Stanford. Senior Tiffany Marsh recorded her first-career hat trick and posted a career-high eight points in the game.
A LOOK AT THE TERPS: Senior Tiffany Marsh leads the team and the ACC with 19 points. She, along with sophomore Janneke van Leeuwen, are also the team's and the nation's assist leaders with seven each.
Junior Paula Infante is second in the nation and first on the team with seven goals on the season. Her 14 points rank sixth in the nation.
Goalkeepers Kathryn Masson and Christina Restivo have split time in the cage. Masson has posted both of the team's shutouts and boasts a miniscual 0.33 goals against average which is second in the ACC. Restivo has a team-high 11 saves and is fifth in the conference with 2.75 saves per game.
IN THE RANKINGS: In the first National Field Hockey Coaches Association Top 20 poll, the Terps rate No. 2 overall. The ACC occupies the top four spots in the ranking, with Wake Forest garnering the No. 1 position. North Carolina and Duke are third and fourth, respectively. Newcomer Boston College was ranked 16th.
Nine of Maryland's opponents this season are ranked in this week's top 20. The Terps have already defeated No. 9 Michigan and No. 17 Ohio State, as well as, No. 10 Old Dominion who the Terps will play one more time before the end of the year.
ABOUT BOSTON COLLEGE: The Eagles will play in their first-ever ACC game when they host the Terps this weekend. BC is heads into the weekend at 4-1, with its only loss coming to cross-town rival Boston University. Three of its four victories have come by at least a two-goal margin, averaging a 2.80 margin of victory which ranks fourth in the nation.
Boasting the fifth-best offense in the nation tallying 4.40 goals per game, the Eagles are led by Kristen Madden's seven goals and 17 points on the season.
Veteran goalkeeper Jillian Savoy has played the majority of minutes in goal for Boston College. She has made 22 saves and has a 2.06 goals against average.
The Eagles are coached by first-year head coach Ainslee Lamb. She previously spent five years at Yale, leading the Bulldogs to a 41-47 record in her tenure.
SERIES VS. BOSTON COLLEGE: Maryland leads the all-time series, 2-0, winning a 3-2 overtime thriller last season on the campus of Harvard University. Tiffany Marsh tallied the game winner after the goalie was forced out of the game because of a yellow card.
ABOUT HARVARD: The Crimson are undefeated heading into the weekend, 3-0, and play Holy Cross before facing the Terps. Fielding the best defense in the nation, Harvard has not given up a goal this season.
Harvard has looked to a balanced offense with five different players scoring at least a goal. Beverlie Ting leads the way with two goals. The Crimson has looked to rookie Kelly Knoche to handle the goalkeeping duties, playing every minute in the cage.
At the helm is 18th-year head coach Sue Caples. She guided Harvard to its third Ivy League title last season. The Crimson 15 letterwinners and seven starters from last year's 11-7 team.
SERIES VS. HARVARD: The Terps won the only meeting between the teams two years ago, 5-1. After trailing 1-0, Maryland's Paula Infante scored the game-tying then the eventual game-winning goal to lead the Terps to the win.
MARYLAND VS. THE IVY LEAGUE: Maryland has been very successful against Ivy League teams, posting a 22-9-1 record against them. The Terps won the only meeting against Harvard in 2003 and boasts an all-time record of 12-5 versus Pennsylvania. The series has been close against Princeton, with the Terps going 9-4-1 against the Tigers.
This weekend's meeting versus Harvard is the Terps' first of back-to-back games against teams from the Ivy and the frist of three overall. Maryland faces Princeton in October.
PERFECT!: Freshman Sarah Scholl has made the most of her scoring opportunities, scoring goals on her only two shot attempts of the season. She tallied her first-career goal in the Terps' season-opening win at Northwestern, 5-2. Her latest tally was the game winner vs. Stanford, 6-0, in the second game of the Terrapin Invitational. Scholl has made an immediate impact, earning a starting spot in the last six games.
POWLEY HELPS U.S. JUNIOR TEAM TO A DRAW AGAINST THE DUTCH: All-American Lauren Powley helped the U.S. Junior National team played top-seeded the Netherlands to a 2-2 draw at the Junior World Cup in Santiago, Chile, on Sept. 15. The Americans battled from behind twice to tie the top team in the world.
The U.S. is 1-0-1 after two days at the Junior World Cup, defeating England, 4-2, on the first day of competition. Powley, who was playing as a member of the Senior National team this summer, was named a starter in both games at the junior World Cup.
COMING UP: Terps return home for a mid-week game against the Ivy League's University of Pennsylvania on Wednesday, Sept. 21. Maryland then hosts three-time defending NCAA Champion Wake Forest in a crucial ACC clash, Saturday, Sept. 24 at 1 p.m.
