No. 2 Maryland hosts Pennsylvania on Wednesday night, Sept. 21, the Terps' second-straight game versus an Ivy League team. It is the first meeting between the teams since 1998.
GAME NOTES
Game 10: Wed., Sept. 21 Pennsylvania (3-2) 7 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT: Maryland swept its weekend trip to Massachusetts, picking up shutout wins over ACC newcomer and then-No. 16 Boston College, 3-0, and Harvard, 1-0.
The Terps were not very welcoming to the Eagles who were playing in their school's first-ever ACC home game. Susie Rowe's first-career goal on a penalty corner almost 11 minutes in the game would hold up a the game winner. Seniors Jackie Ciconte and Tiffany Marsh also scored to secure the win.
Against the Crimson, Harvard had only one shot in the game as the Terrapin defense continues to suffocate its opponents. Ciconte tallied the only goal of the game, diving to deflect a pass from freshman Sarah Scholl into the net.
A LOOK AT THE TERPS: Senior Tiffany Marsh continues to lead the team in scoring with 22 points on seven goals and eight assists. The eight assists ties for the most on the team with sophomore Janneke van Leeuwen and ties the most in the nation.
Senior Jackie Ciconte is tied for second in the nation and first on the team with eight goals, whie Marsh and junior Paula Infante are close behind with seven apiece.
Goalkeepers Christina Restivo and Kathryn Masson continue to split time in the cage. Both have combined for four shutouts on the season, with Masson leading the way with three, the second-most in the ACC. She also sports a 0.25 goals against average. Restivo is ranked 12th in the nation with a 1.16 GAA.
IN THE RANKINGS: For the second-straight week, the Terrapins are ranked second in the nation. The ACC continues to dominate the field hockey competition, going 33-5 against non-conference opponents this season. Wake Forest holds the No. 1 spot in the polls for the second-consecutive week. North Carolina is ranked third while Duke is fifth. Boston College dropped slightly to No. 18 and Virginia is receiving votes.
The Terps face 10 teams ranked in this weeks' poll. Maryland has already defeated No. 7 Old Dominion, No. 9 Michigan, No. 14 Ohio State and No. 20 Harvard, who is making its first appearance in the poll. The Terp will play ODU one more time, as well as play No. 4 American in the final regular season game.
ABOUT PENNSYLVANIA: The Quakers come into Wednesday's contest at 3-2, having recently lost to Cornell, 3-1.
Penn has scored just four goals on the season, but has limited its opponents to just five tallies. Goalkeeper Liz Scholssberg boasts a 1.33 goals against average which ranks 18th in the nation.
Lea Salese has scored almost half the team's goals, leading the squad with four.
Head coach Val Cloud has been at the Penn helm for 11 seasons and has an 81-96 career record.
SERIES VS. PENNSYLVANIA: The Terps lead the all-time series, 12-5, winning the last nine meetings, but the teams have not played since 1998. Of the 12 wins the Terps have claimed over the Quakers, nine have been shutouts. All five Quaker victories have been by just a goal.
Maryland vs. THE IVY LEAGUE: Maryland has been very successful against Ivy League teams, posting a 23-9-1 record against them. The Terps are coming off a win over Harvard, improving to 2-0 in the series, and boast an all-time record of 12-5 versus Pennsylvania. The series has been close against Princeton, with the Terps going 9-4-1 against the Tigers. Maryland will face Princeton in October.
COUNTDOWN TO 300: Maryland head coach Missy Meharg is just 10 wins away from 300-career wins. Heading into the season, she was 10th among Division I head coaches in career wins. She currently has 290 career victories and is looking to become only the seventh Division I head coach with 300 wins.
GOING FOR A PERFECT 10: Riding a nine-game win streak heading into their game with Penn, the Terps are looking for a perfect 10-0 start to the season. Maryland last went 10-0 to open the season in 2003.
POWLEY AND U.S. JUNIOR TEAM CONTINUE SUCCESS AT WORLD CUP: The U.S. Junior National Team has had a successful run at the Junior World Cup in Santiago, Chile, so far, and Terrapin senior All-American Lauren Powley has been a significant contributor to the team's success as a starter in the midfield in every game.
The Americans opened with a win over England (4-2), then followed up with a surprising draw to the Netherlands, 2-2. After a crushing 14-0 victory over Zimbabwe, the U.S. came-from-behind to top host Chile, 3-1. The U.S. suffered its first loss, falling to Australia, however, 1-0. The goal came in the final minute of regulation.
COMING UP: No. 1 vs. No. 2 square off this weekend at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. The second-ranked Terrapins host three-time defending NCAA Champion and No. 1-ranked Wake Forest on Saturday, Sept. 24 at 1 p.m.
